Better because the dealer won't be $8 and what is it you keep saying needs batteries? Neither that bluetooth scan tool nor the rostra phone/music bluetooth requires any batteries. The truck requires a battery so not sure what the batteryphobia is about.

The $30 OBDII reader that I have takes AA batteries.

A BT OBDII reader and Torque app. I think I spent 35 bucks on both 3 years ago, and it works like a champ.

The BT reader is powered from the OBDII bus. No batteries. Works if the truck has power - I think it's the ignition circuit, but might be accessory. Either way, doesn't work if truck is off, so no parasitic drain.

Makes sense to not want to carry those around in truck. Did you check out the link I posted to the Rostra site for audio/phone that runs off factory radio above? It is plugnplay. I scored one off someone here so got it for about half price but whatever the new ones cost is still better than a dealer option. IMO................My truck is 08 non-JBL stereo so they'll have one that'll work in your 07

Weird that your OBD II needs batteries. Neither of mine do. Heck, my Scangauge II even pulls power from the OBD II port.

You probably won't do this but a really great buy are those $150-$300 OBD II readers that include a read out of what the code means as well as a pile of other functions like programming the tire sensors when you get new ones. I lend mine out and it's easily paid itself back.

I for one am totally against a BT connected to the OBD II on cars. On Toyota you'd be relatively okay because there software is fairly locked up but on a GM where people already know the way in. That being said kids these days break into computer just for tits so I'm sure some kid would hack a Toyota for fun. It'd suck to be in traffic and have some punk kid take control of your throttle and send you into another car or intentionally lean out you throttle maps and blow the engine..

Digital security on background devices, like the ECU in a car, will be a major issue in the next few years. This is one of the reasons I hate all encompassing devices like OnStar. What's to stop someone from breaking into OnStar and shutting off a vehicles motor? Or worse modifying software to track the car or to allow for uploading damaging code to the ECU.

A bluetooth connection on the OBD II at all times is a huge security issue IMHO.

Bluetooth has a 4 digit security code. It's not much, but it's enough to keep someone from hacking you while you're stopped nearby at a traffic light.

nearly any parts store can help you pull a code, but I'm sure this is already known. Personally, while I think it'd be nice it's far from a "killer feature," and I certainly wouldn't fault a vehicle for not having the ability to do so. I did a very brief check and it doesn't appear as though those features are available on either the Frontier or the Colorado, either.

$100 diagnosis by the dealer to read a code that a parts store will do for free (if not made illegal - CA and HI). Why put function in for government mandated cash cow?

I am somewhat of a data freak and I like collecting and categorizing data about anything. I think there is really no reason not to have an integrated OBDII reader in the vehicle that displays the code in a user-friendly fashion now that we have fancy LCD displays and such. Also, with the advent of ECU, Bluetooth and GPS, I think it'd be neat to be able to port all the ECU and other data (such as the timeline of speed, gearshifting, fuel tank status etc) into a phone application so that you can analyze it afterwards. I think the ECU should share all of its data through Bluetooth
