Where to hunt in Central VA

I'm in the Charlottesville area and want to get back out in the woods this year (it's been over a decade) but don't have any where to go. Searching online I've found some public lands within an hour but am always a little hesitant about that because some people are just not safe with guns.

Any suggestions?
