Well your '16 has plenty of grill space for intercoolers.

Dude, who asked for your opinion on his wrap? It's a thread asking for suggestions on how to achieve better gas mileage....
"No Offense, I hate how your truck looks" is still an insult even if you said "no offense". If you have nothing productive to add, gtfo.

Don't mean to vent, just over trolls. I agree that you should probably see where regearing gets you before going for boost/swap.

    I had to laugh.

What about going with a tube bumper later down the road for the front? I know that's a major change and kind of working backwards but it would probably cut a lot of weight and look just as aggressive.

Honestly, just larger tires on my Tundra was killing the mileage.

13-14 mpg.. You need a Ram Power Wagon. More money into your truck will be wasted if you think you're going to improve power and improve your economy.

A big truck like that will have identical or better mileage to you but actually be capable of carrying that load properly and have decent range.

I would recommend getting a larger rear axle like a Dana 60 or over re-gearing the stock rear axle. With all the money you would spend on a OE ring, pinion, and install kit you won't be far from just paying for a stronger axle.

^^ Agree. Gears would be the last real route before cutting your losses.

There's no debate here from my experience... this 3.5L motor is extremely fickle. If I add 300lbs of passenger I drop at least 3mpg. Forget throwing another 400lbs of hunting gear and dog crates in there...

Hot dang, love the rig but kinda bummed with the performance you are getting. Gearing would be my first route.

I am sure with the cash put in this thing, you probably don't want to give up on it too soon :)

This is exactly what I'm thinking. I wonder how the trd pro will be with the added weight from suspension components, skid plate, etc. Not sure exactly how much heavier it is, will have to wait for it to come out.

To the op, like others have said i wouldn't expect any mpg gains from a turbo or sc, but more power would be nice.

I think someone will come out with something, hopefully sooner rather than later. Would like to see torque gains from one if that's possible.

    Extreme Build in Progress!
I just noticed something VERY interesting. This morning, I drove home from the airport. 70 miles, mostly flat terrain, no major hills or grades. Only overpasses. If I drive 65 MPH, the transmission will hunt between 5th gear and 4th gear spending the majority of the time in 5th. It will only shift into 6th gear when going down hill. BUT, if I use the cruise control set at 65 MPH, the transmission stays in 4th most of the time and occasionally shifts to 3rd. It rarely shifted to 5th and never into 6th while in cruise. Ever! As a result, the average MPG display on the dash also showed higher/better MPG when the vehicle was NOT in cruise control. Cruise control seems to keep my trans in 4th gear on the freeway.

My guess is, trans is still fine. Not the issue. Re-gearing should change that. Correct?

Yes, but at some point you may not have changed much. Regear and it stays in 6th but same rpm as 5th with old gears isn't any better.

I have cash in hand for my new truck but all the power/transmission issues with the 2016 have made me suspend my search. Such a royal disappointment. Not many new trucks take a step back from the previous generation but the 4.0 was a better fit and maintained better MPG under load.
Toyota's best selling truck is the Tacoma but they chose to wussify it. You think they could have after 10 years come up with something better. Heard few complaints about the Colorado 3.6L in terms of power. Driving the new auto reminds me of driving my mom's Hyuandai Elentra that sends RPM's screaming every time you hit the gas on an incline. Really sucks because I feel loyal to Toyota for how reliable my current Tacoma has been.
I will probably get flamed for this post but oh well, lol.

Going from 3.91 to 4.30 will lower the gearing. It'll effectively undo the increase in final ratio you got when you jumped to 33+ tires. It should put the truck back in the sweet spot for 55-60 mph running and will also get you back to a better crawl ratio. Truck won't have all the power on tap that it had when it was many pounds lighter (as if you don't already know that), but it will be an solid step in the right direction.

The reason you probably havn't heard about the colorado is because the engine isn't atkinson cycle, it doesn't ever go into limp mode.

The tacoma in automatic is trying to get the best fuel economy possible...always switching to higher gear to get lowest rpms possible.

Put the truck into shift mode so it stays in 4th or under and put it into ECT mode.

Putting the truck into cruise control is going to drop the truck into 4th on the highway going uphill since it doesn't have enough torque to maintain speed.

I'm pretty sure I heard that when the 2nd gens were released that it had a transmission reflash or something, so i wont be surprised if the 3rd gen has one.

If not i guess it's just something we will have to get used to...or get a manual. I would rather have an auto though, i have my bike for shifting.

Thought about methanol injection? Cheap and a fair amount of horsepower for the money.

It appears that $ is not the issue with MPG. Is it the range? A larger fuel tank perhaps?

I must have missed the boat when it came to this build. Can someone please post that link or would you mind laying out all the add-ons you have done?

Is ems engine management system and how do you know?

If you get it, will it void your warranty? It would be sweet of urd made a contract with toyota or something to get one from the factory, or have it installed from toyota dealers.
