I have been looking at trucks for my oldest who will be getting his license soon. I found an ad for a 1998 Tacoma reg cab 4 cylinder 2WD. The ad doesn't have an engine pic. Did that package come with the 2.4 or the 2.7?

If its a 5 lug truck, it will have the 2.4. If its a pre-runner, it will have the 2.7. Hopefully someone with a truck like that will chime in.

5 lugs are naturally lower in height.

When I'm done it will have a custom fabbed winch bumper and hopefully a Softtopper.
The wife has a 6 lug, 4 x 4 standard cab. It sports the 2.7.

She loves it and has people constantly asking her to sell it. I don't know what it is about the standard cab, 1st gens, but people love them.

Very dependable. 24 mpg on the xway, 19 around town. Kinda rough riding compared to my xcab and Tundra, but I think that is one of the things that wappeal to people.

This is a five lug truck so it should have the 2.4 then. Are they as bullet proof as the 2.7? The truck has 150K but I am not really bothered by that if it's as tough as most Yota 4 bangers

The 2.4 is designated as the 2RZ-FE. The 2.7 is the 3RZ-FE. They are almost identical except for the displacement. The 2RZ is just as tough as the 22RE if not a little more so. Because the RZ series of engines does not have trouble with the timing chains like the 22REs do. If the oil has been changed with somewhat regular frequency you should be fine.
