For true "off roading" Not mudding. It really is about gearing, not power. If you are talking about mudding, well that is a different story

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
What Toyota should do is make Reg cab version with 1FZ-FE:D
I would totally dig that. More power and still inline 6 for ease of working on it on the trail.
There is room for it and it would fit like a glove, ultimate engine.

I had a 09 4X4 4cyl, I now have a '10 V6 OR. To think the 4 cyl is even close. Not including the locking diff, and A-TRAC, the power difference alone puts the 6 on a different level.the 6 hardly weighs more, and puts an extra 50% power to the ground. Gearing is not relevant, because either way you cut it, the 6 puts more down from bottom to top. Not to mention there is no disadvantage off road with the 6. Part of this difference is the fact that the 4 cyl only comes in stick...
I'm not bashing the 4, I liked it more than my 6, but it was not as capable.

"Gearing is not relevant, because either way you cut it, the 6 puts more down from bottom to top"

the gearing comment isn't really related to the toyotas, as i would think they're very close to each other so are equally capable - but related to the what makes a vehicle more capable for over all off roading,

from a pure, all things being equal status - gearing is so far and away the most important aspect of a vehicles ability to off road (meaning, going up, over and down stuff... NOT going fast and running through some mud or sand) that it's not even funny.

power has nothing to do with it's ability. i learned to drive in a 1969 willy's jeep that was geared so low you could walk faster than it could go in low-range first gear. it kicks our CJ5's butt in pure off road capability - they weren't even close in ability. the willy had a very small four cylinder and the Jeep had a V8 in it.

it doesn't matter how much you 'put down' if the gearing is too high. you still can't crawl up that hill.

Technical off roading is only 1 type. The 6 is no worse for it. And there are many situations where the 6 is better. And the 4 has no meaningful gearing advantage anyhow, so I don't see how that argument is relevent.

I agree. Not to mention you can gear your axles and/or transfer case any way you want. Regardless of engine type.

Regular Cab Owner: I think a 4 banger, on a tacoma, is the best offroad engine ever
Double Cab Owner: I disagree, it's a very good offroader, but I think a 6 cylinder is the best offroader ever
Regular Cab Owner: 6 cylinders suck!
Double Cab owner: You know something? YOU SUCK!

I hope someone gets the Billy Madison reference. This is how I am reading this entire thread.

If gearing is about going slow I can make my auto go slower than and gear you can put in a manual shift without stalling out. I agree gearing makes a big difference but most of that difference is negated with an automatic transmission.... because it can go howyver slow you want to go.
I have had them both ways... the auto is better IMO...

The idea that a standard is any better, is hard to argue, with 5 speeds and durability..... The slushbox argument worked when autos sucked....

Also the 4cyl are not all 4.10 and all v6 are not 3.73.... It depends on the model ... Base model 4cyl isn't 4.10 and some v6 are 4.10 stock

I had a 4 cylinder Jeep wrangler- and that 4cylinder couldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight! I know the 4 cylinder in the Taco is way more powerful. That jeep could get through some trails but you had to rev it so much! That was a major pain in the ass- especially with larger tires, trying to climb over things!

More than 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder I like having an auto instead of manual for offroad! JMHO

With bigger tires u have to regear! I had 33 on stock gears and I had to go to 4k in 3rd gear to get to 80mph ... But 4.10 and it's like stock power again! Gearing is major with bigger tires and lifts

Manual ftw in off roading ... More control in soft sand and stuff
