which transmission cooler?

    I'm looking at putting together my own "tow package" and wanted to start with the transmission cooler. It seems that a lot of guys on here like the hayden coolers. I was wondering which specific model to buy? Is the Hayden 678 cooler the size to go with? Thanks!

    Any suggestions? I live in NY and it can get pretty cold in the winter (occasional single digits), so I'm wondering if the fluid will be running too cold ( or even gel up? ) if I put in a larger cooler rated for 5000lbs. I'm also hesitant to put in a light duty cooler that's rated to 2500lbs as my taco can tow more than that. I live in a mountain area where I have a good amount of steep inclines and the 4 cyl is frequently hunting for gears, so even when not towing the tranny cooler seems like a good idea, I just can't figure out which one to go with...

    You're not going to find them at Pep Boys, but higher end coolers have a thermal bypass that diverts the fluid around the cooler until it needs cooling.

    Expect $200+

    Do you think such a cooler would be necessary in cold climates? If so, can you name any brands?

    I'd recommend it in colder climates, especially if you commonly make short trips to work/class where the engine doesn't get up to temperature and maintain that level for a while.

    Either way, I would be looking to a higher quality cooler from B&M. They and Hayden have been in the business for a very long time, but Hayden has always been more low-end mass-sales oriented. Quick and easy installation and "okay" performance.
    I'm not fond of their typical mounting method... run a modified zip-tie through the radiator and condensor core.

    Seems like the B&M is the cooler to go with.

    I used their products on my '69 Camaro and '67 Chevelle back in the 80s.
    These days, for a "shift kit", I'd go with TransGo, but B&M would be my 2nd choice if TransGo didn't make a kit for my trans.

    The bypass system in the B&M seems like it will do the trick when it gets cold. I actually remember glancing over the bypass feature when I first came across the B&M coolers while reading the "towing bible". If it gets really cold to people just cover up the coolers?

    I wouldn't cover the cooler if you bypass the factory cooler.
    But yes... if you run the aftermarket inline with the OEM cooler, you can leave it covered and it'll be like you're running stock (except for the part of the radiator that will also be covered).

    I just went though this decision a couple of weeks ago. I have a 2.7 PreRunner DC and do not normally tow very much. Maybe once a year. But, in a few weeks I am going back east and will tow my trailer. Total weight will be 3000 lbs. I wanted to add the tow package, so I bought the factory hitch and wiring harness. For the trans cooler I did not like the mounting methods of anything aftermarket. I even have 3 different sized coolers in my stash in the garage, so it would have been cheap as I'd only have to buy the hose. And I could fab up some brackets, but that was way too much work for my schedule. I decide just to buy the factory cooler for the V6 model. It works fine to tow 7000 lbs (?) It was way overpriced. After figuring out what pieces to buy, it was easy to install.

    Are you going to be towing a lot? I don't see the use of it if you are not towing all the time.

    Forgot to mention that I did not buy 32943A. I cut the stock hose and lengthened it with some standard Gates trans cooler hose. I spliced them together with a coupler and some factory clips. It looks stock, but if I did it again I would just buy the $37 32943A hose.
