    2008 2.7 Base. 200K miles 5sp.

Just started making a horrible whirring sound at cold start up. Sound does not change with engine speed. Goes away in a minute or so. Check engine light came on. Code test says something about exhaust return but then that part isn’t listed as on this engine. MPG is not affected.

No, I also notice the sound goes down a bit in tone when the headlights are turned on. MPG is not affected.

To explain, I left for a long out-of-town work assignment right after I first posted this. I just came back and the truck is still making the sound. I'll try to post a video if I can figure out how.

Code was from AutoZone and it indicated a part that is not listed as a part of this truck. It was something to do with pumping exhaust into the intake at start up. But with no change in the sound when revving the engine, I'm really perplexed. I'm working on the YouTube post now. Also trying Vimeo.

Thank you for the idea. Would that stop after a few moments? And would it not come back after the car sits for 30 minutes after a warm up drive? Today, it went away, then came back for a few seconds then went away until it sat for a few hours. Here is I hope the link for the video I shot. The sound isn't the best, but it gives you an idea.

When you hear the noise.... pop the hood and see if you can trace it. Maybe power steering pump, water pump, maybe one of the pulleys .

Further explanation, I have taken this to two repair folks here and they scratched their heads and recommend I go to the Toyota dealer. Well, that's my last resort as I paid just over $400 to get work done by a certified mechanic to do what the dealer quoted me almost $2,000 to do. That mechanic is off doing racing support as an indication of his level of expertise. He will be back next week but I'd like to give him as many ideas as possible. Thank you to everyone here.

I did pop the hood. To be clear, the sound does not change with the speed of the engine. Any pulleys' sound would change with engine speed, right?

I am going to tag you in the Az bs thread to see if you can find a decent mechanic in your area.
Also @mechanicjon @gearcruncher may have some advice.

As long as the 2.7 doesn’t have a belt driven oil pump you can pull the belt off and start the truck up. If you can start and idle repeatedly without any noise that should narrow the problem down to a belt driven accessory. You could also try cycling the AC on/off if you haven’t already to see if the clutch is dragging/failing and causing the noise.

Use a piece or 3 foot rubber hose to use as the stethoscope to track down where the sound is coming from. Careful you dont get it hung up in the belt or fan.

The AC clutch idea is something that occurred to me last month before I left. THANK YOU for the good idea. It's been too cold here for AC but we use the heck out of it most of the year.

Every time I go to stethoscope it, it goes away too fast. And, I can't convince my girlfriend to help me either. smh. :)
