Typical british plastic design... Some lugnut must have dorked off with one of the 2 nuts and the plastic insert isn't up to holding the bolt by itself...

A lot of starters are getting plastic housings these days and like you said if not paying attention it's easy to over tighten and break the stud loose. At least you found one that's metal.

 

Well I cut a slot in the end of the bolt but still can't get it off.. That cable will stay put until I remove the starter and replace the solenoid.

Projects keep running into things that suck up time.. Gave up on the starter for now, ordered a new solenoid to have on hand, and got the battery cables wrapped up for now. Still want to update the fuse box to alternator cable.


Also started to tear into the radiator mounting.. Found both the centering legs broken off, trying some gorilla glue to hold those back on. Have a lead on an all aluminum radiator for a decent price.

 

Well the gorilla glue didn't seem to hold.. I'm not sure JB Weld or another glue/putty would hold it either... The all Aluminum Racing radiator I found is only $245 with shipping.. I'd rather not spend the money when the radiator works fine otherwise.

 

Well knocked this together today, should work like one of those universal radiator mounts with rubber inserts. Also rented a flare tool from advance to get some bump on the aluminum replacement for the silly brittle plastic overflow(?) tube.

 

I like that idea of the cradle for the rad. good ingenuity!!!

 

It'll hopefully work until something majorly functional breaks on the radiator. Meanwhile the all aluminum one will be on a slow boat from China.

Damn it's gotta come from all the way over there. That sucks. Personally I think the set up you have looks better than the factory set up.

 

Yea but for the price I don't mind waiting. The new one works a champ, the gorilla glue I thought was holding did not when I got it put in place.

 

Yeah I haven't been impressed with gorilla glue for what I've tried using it for

 

Just bought an Ultra-gauge for her majesty so when the wife drives it she doesn't have to worry about setting up her phone to monitor temps and such, plus I can set alarms.

 

The driverside radiator mount, of course it didn't break in the same place. She's back where she belongs, I buttoned up the overflow tube, now I just need to cut the hose for it and bend one more corner to tidy it all up.

 

Ugh, what a mess

 

Apparently when I was attempting to change the starter battery cable I fucked the solenoid when the stud spun. I can hear the solenoid engaging and disengaging but it won't fire the starter... Clank, clank, clank, clank

 

yes those are essential with these Rovers. It's one thing after another as you are starting to find out. Typically nothing major mechanical but dumb shit that breaks like brittle plastic, coolant resiviors, radiator caps, and sensors

 

Starter solenoid replaced, added a 2nd nut to the positive terminal so maybe it won't fuck off and spin another time. Tested with my jumper box and all seems to work well.
