Just ordered a Steering Gearbox from Rockauto. The prices fluctuated from $416 to $460 so I just waited a while and it's back down. Now I do kind of dread getting to it and taking it out..

Old steering gear box is out and new one is in and bled. Seems to be nice and smooth.

Working on replacing all the rubber brake lines with stainless steel brake lines. Managed to destroy a nut so went and got some more hard line and then realized the standard and metric fittings are slightly different, it uses bubble flares and there's a specific tool for it, and again auto parts store workers don't know what they sell. Dude at advance auto said the double flare tool makes bubble flares, I told him people do it but there's a different tool for it, he didn't believe me. Now I'm gonna go back to pickup my online order with coupons for the right tool.

New hard line and stainless steel soft brake line goodness. I now own a European bubble flare tool..

The Transmission/Tranfer case over temperature light came on the other day while I was test driving the new Brake lines.. Come to find out there is a Temp switch(not sending unit) in the trans cooler set to come on at 300F but they are common to go bad. I am going to replace them the trans cooler one with an actual sending unit and also add one to the transmission itself so that I know the actual temps. The transmission one will be going in the suction port right here near the cooler return line.

I was kind of on the fence about which gauge to get, couldn't find a coupon, so I asked on their chat and got a 5% coupon. That's enough for me to get off the fence.

Here's some trans temp info from a good source, Ashcroft

The Pump suction and Line pressure plugs are 3/4(19mm) head and the threads measure 19.7mm indicating by this chart it's a M20 thread. I didn't think to measure the inner diameter to see what the thread pitch is but it is looks to be fine pitch.

I want to do more research on the T/C and 'A' clutch lines before using one of those ports which look to be closer to m14, they are 6mm allen keyed.

The Transmission cooler Temp Switch thread is M10x1. An 1/8th NPT fitting fits and seals well enough :D

    https://www.checkfluid.com/pages.php?pID=20&CDpath=3_20

Peak trans temp so far with a run to the store, gonna try to up the temp more.
    MVIMG_20191020_151811.jpg

1st gear at 30mph brought the temp up some, then idled through the neighborhood and parked in the driveway. It's not heatsoaking above 156*.
    MVIMG_20191020_154214.jpg MVIMG_20191020_155311.jpg

The temp switch for the idiot light went bad, setting the light. It's not supposed to set the light until 300*.

I'm sure that's why it's the way it is. Also how I got this thing for the price I did (or at least similar situation).

Grabbed a Gentex 50-GENK2AM rear view mirror after reading that it would fit the wacky rover mount. When I got it in it fits the discovery 1 twist lock mount with an adapter that some places sell with it.. It does not fit Discovery 2 weird T mount. So after some looking around I found that VW/Audi has a similar mount and found an adapter that looks like it might work.

It's headliner time. Built a table to mostly fit it.

^This tool is garbage^, took several tries to get a flare that looked like a gorilla with a rock made it. I returned it and bought this one from eBay. It makes a perfect metric DIN/ISO bubble flare the first time and doesn't damage the line how the Jaws in the clamp of the other one did.

Cleaned off the old foam yesterday, I might put the new headliner material on today.

Brake parts are here. Ordered them from ebay seller brakemotive76. Based on what others have said these are Powerstop brand brakes, they were a good price so I took a shot. Here are the part numbers on the packaging.

Working on the rear brakes and the last wheel I find this sludgey gem.. Not sure what's going on yet, I need more brake cleaner... And maybe some diff oil..

My original thought was that the previous owner submerged the truck in a nasty muck hole. After closer look and checking the diff oil level, it's definitely a leaking hub or possibly just an oring. I've ordered both. The rear brake install is on hold..

The front brake comparison. The old Rotors were worn well below the minimum spec, the new Rotors are right at the top end of the max spec, and these brake pads didn't have much life left. I have run the break-in procedure and the brakes seem better. I think I'll be amazed at how it stops with all 4 brakes working.
