5lug with stock 2tr-fe, stock 3.33 rear gears and 31x10.5x15 tires... I can still chirp the tires when I shift from 1st to 2nd at redline. Yes 4.10 or even 4.56 gears would be better. I just can't justify spending $400-$500 on just re-gearing...

The only bad thing with low gears and big tires is that to accelerate on highway, I usually have to drop it to 3rd to pick up speed. 5th gear becomes only cruising, because it will not accelerate in 5th...lol

I got a 96 with the four banger. I have 33/11.50/15 on mine and I can cruise around almost everywhere in fifth. I do have a throttle body spacer, full intake, and exhaust. Also have a lil switch to add a couple more hp and it helps run more air smoother.

I can't speak for autos, I have a 06 2.7L i4 Manual and am running 235/75r15 and I notice a small lag getting going but other than that I don't recognize any real power loss. THese tires are near 30 inches and they work great. dead on speedo, haven't really lost mpgs, over all they are a great size. So much better than the stock size tires and they give a nice little height boost with no other neccessary mods.

just speaking from experince with my 6 inch lift and 35's. IF you have truck on stock gears i highly recommend changing out the gears if you go wheeling alot. Two weeks ago i burnt out my clutch, it was not cheap.

1.5 leaf spring lift, Behind the grill hella light with hid, Billet grille painted black, Core racing Wheels. Steering wheel cover.
i got 235/75r16 on my 5lug and thats about 29.83 in total diameter with 6 ply. i dont feel any power loss exept for a little vib when acceleration, however its seems the vib is cured when i add 1.5 inch lift in the back.

Last night tried my girlfriend rims on my Tacoma and they look great, too bad I couldn’t keep them. You can see the pictures on my built at the link in the signature.

They are 18" with 235\60\R18 from a Mazda CX7 and they are street wheels not off-road but I think I can fit a 17" with some decent tires so I'll Keep you posted. I drove it around and they performed with no robbing.
