I want to hear the good and bad of it. I want to move there, just not sure how I can do that with a house (well, 2) here. Any idea of rent prices for a townhouse or small house? Whats the difference between so cal and no cal? I am an electrician by trade, would it be hard for me to find work there? Chicago is.....boring. high property tax, high sales tax, crappy weather 9 months out of the year, people are pricks, etc etc.

    Thaks for the help!

well norcal is way better than socal, better weather and better people in my opinion :) i'm only 17 so i don't know too much buut i live in a 1400 sqft townhouse in sacramento and rent is 975 and sac is a pretty cheap place to live so hopefully that gives you somewhat of an idea, really just depends on where you want to live. my boyfriend is an electrician apprentice and he says that at times the work can be a little slow but he always has a job..

Ahhh, having done the Chicago to LA move this what I have noticed

Rents obviously depend on where your going. In LA rents are high but you can find some good stuff. Im in a 3br 1 ba house with a view for 1800. Its cheaper the further east you go. Gas prices are comparable to Chicago. Property tax is low, sales tax is high. Weather is fabulous 11 1/2 months, the other 2 weeks it rains or is windy.

Norcal is awesome too but I'm a SoCal guy so Viva Los Angeles. Either way wherever you go this place has plenty of things to do.

if your gonna say that the weather is better up in norcal then your crazy . weather is the best here in socal, if you wanna be depressed and think about committing suicide cuz of all the gloominess up there then all power to you! Rent is also MORE expensive up in the san fran area. ur cheapest bet is the go to ventura, or live inland near palmdale or inland empire for cheaper rent. real estate is going down too, so the best time to buy is gonna be now till next year

How much is sales tax? It's a crappy 10.5% here I believe. Also, I don't remember any toll roads when I was out there, correct? Depending on where I am working I am spending like 20-40 bucks a month on tolls....and anyhwere from 30- 75 mins each way commuting.

I could care less about a view. I would first be interested in a) living somewhere that I could afford to keep the house in IL to see if I could stand living there. b) somewhere where I wont get killed. c) getting a job.

MsTrd- is your bf in a union? Any idea of what full scale is out there? I am a union foreman here and not sure what would happened if I transfered.

My biggest gripe is a) weather b) people c) nothing to do here. Going into the city is expensive and played out. I want to be able to just take off on my bike and cruise some hills, or go camping, or something actually fun and not indoors.

what's a small house cost there? In my town, a small house is now around 250-300. I have a 2500 sq that is worth around 360-380 for comparison. I just bought a foreclosure in WI for 60K and renting it out after remodeling it. I don't think I could get approved/swing a third mortgage :)

Sales tax is 8.25% believe. There are some toll roads but they are in Orange County. Housing I would say look in the San Fernando Valley, east of LA, or Long Beach. This is of course if you come to SoCal.

As for outdoor stuff, if you want to do it, we pretty much have it. Its gonna be in the 60's and 70's in the winter and in the mountains it snows

i know of a house near my friends thats up in the valley in the hills (more money) its a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom for around 400. but this neighborhood is not cheap and is only 20 mins from the beach and 10 mins from downtown LA. so if you go inland you should have a problem finding a house for around 300

I grew up in the Bay Area and now live in the Sacramento area. I used to travel to So-cal all of the time for business and would agree that there is lots to do down there and the weather is awesome. There is definitely plenty to do in the Sacramento area and from here you are less than 2 hours from the bay area, ocean, snow, reno, etc.
If you are looking for motorcycle riding as well there are thousands of great miles of twistys up here.

yea its all good, some people like to stay covered up 24/7 and some people like to wear tshirts 24/7. i will admit though that the weather in october is the best for nor cal weather. but after going up there twice a year for the last 3 years, the sunny everyday is my best bet, but damn ur guys air is so so so fresh and so clean clean!

Coming from wild weather changes and 50 degree temperature swings, i'll take the pleasant 75-90 degrees for 10 months of the year.....wait what season is it again?
