It's pretty varied depending on what part of the state you live in. In my neighborhood, you're looking at about $200-300K for a condo conversion. At the market's peak you couldn't get a home for less than $400K even for a small house (1000 sqft). You can check out local San Diego prices here with pictures:
    http://sdhomes.signonsandiego.com/

I think the median home price in San Diego now is around $375K. And I'd say the average size is 1500 sq ft.

State sales tax is 7.25%. Some areas tack on extra for their communities. I think the highest I ever saw the state tax in San Diego was 7.75%.

Good things: Sun, nice beaches, hot women (ref. MsTrd :D), hills, awesome weather...

Bad things: High cost of living, and fire.

right on- my buddy works over at walgreens.

thats pretty cool then. we are at 39 here +2 for foreman.

thanks for the information. the prices are not as high as i thought they were. lower sales tax (10.5 here), lower property tax as I'm in a cheaper property tax area and my taxes are now 1.5% of my purchase price.

tonight is family night, ima see their thoughts. i know they wont be happy :(

I think many have covered most of the things. It just depends on if you like cooler or warmer weather. LA tends to have a rush hour all day long vs the bay area that truly has a rush hour and then ends once everyone is at work or at home.

There are some good areas of LA that are nice to live. The closer you are to the coast the better the air. If you are an electrician, remember traffic is a huge influence on your work if you do travel for your job.

House prices continue to drop and honestly, I would not buy now as the prices keep going down.

The weather is great and there is something for everyone here depending on where you want to live. Definitely research earthquake fault lines, areas prone to mudslides and fires, etc.

I have never understood the NorCal vs SoCal other then guys putting huge stickers on their trucks. You have strange people no matter where you live, but I find that here, nobody really cares what you do, what you look like, who you sleep with, what you do to your truck, etc. There is a niche for everyone here.

One downer, the state is broke and much of the infrastructure is breaking down. The roads are in terrible shape and I would not expect them to be improved anytime soon. If you have kids, make sure you choose an area that has good schools.

Despite some of those issues, I love being able to go to the beach, the mountains, the desert all within a days drive. If you love the outdoors, you will love it here.

well, when people say cold, i think like 30s. 60s is not cold :)

I talked it over with the family at dinner night- my sister and brother in law were all for it. they want to move to cali as well lol. my mom was for it, my dad didnt say much. i was actually surprised that they would all be ok with it. now the biggest problem is figuring out what I am going to do with my house in IL. i cant really sell it since i dont have enough equity in it...plus if i dont like cali i dont have a home to come back to. i could try to rent it i guess.

i have one family member in LA (works at ucla). I could stay there for a while...but i dont think i want to live/work in la either though. where is the dividing point between north/south/central cali?

anyone know what the income tax is for middle class wages?
