Does anyone know the torque spec. of the rear differential fill and drain plugs?

    Thanks.

Nope, just tighten them until snug.

All you have to do is squeeze the gasket a bit, no need to overthink it

    Thanks.

Well, I removed the fill plug and saw that the oil level is only 1/8" below the bottom of the fill hole. I didn't bother changing or adding oil.

I'm going to take it in this week. I hope the dealer does rear end work. Many places don't anymore.

You could do it yourself in less than a day. (half day for the professional DIYer)
Buy an ECGS Reman 3rd member.

The 3rd member will fit in a 5 gallon bucket.
Which makes sending the core back "easy".

    Seriously......

That's not a bad option at all. I wonder if I could coordinate it with my local shop.

Am I correct in the assumption that the 3rd member arrives pre-shimmed, etc?

    Thanks.

Yes, it's a drop in unit.
    No shimming or measuring.

I'm going to check that out. It should, in theory, only entail a couple of hours of professional labor to swap it out.

In theory. I believe most techs hang the axle shafts out just far enough to get the diff out and back in, only disconnecting the brake tubes.

    That sounds about right.

Although...I wonder if I should have them replace the left-side wheel bearing at the same time. It's original. The right side was replaced 4,000 miles ago.

^^^A while-yer-in-there repair. That's just the reality of older vehicles. My 4Runner is an '09 and most small things mushroom into while-yer-in-there fixes.
