Why don't people like the push button start?

Yeah, I rented one a few years ago when I was in Lake Tahoe and never got used to it. Not a fan of the dial.

I'm a fan of push start. Unlocking, locking, starting, hands free blah blah.

I still find myself trying to push start my Tundra even though it's key. Also try to key start my Tacoma when it's push start.

I heard the same thing. From what I understand the ‘fix’ they came up with after that happened was for the engine to shut-off if a door is open and it’s in gear or something like that.

This is the exact reason I got rid of the Ram 1500 and bought the Tacoma (and that I always wanted one). I took it in for a stack of recalls. I got home and found out I could no longer back up with the driver door open. I took it back and told the service manager they broke my truck and I wanted that recall rolled back-No can do. I was only looking for a small nudge to move to the Tacoma and that was enough. :D

    Close.

The car jams up the disc brakes kind of like the German cars do when you engage the parking mechanism.

And there’s no way of unjamming it unless you literally put it in park, shut the car off, get out, lock it, unlock it, get back in, and start it.

Thanks for the correction, I knew they made change but wasn’t certain what it was.

The only reason I know is because it happened to me twice when I borrowed my wife’s car.

I wanted to stick my head out the door to make sure I was parked on the line in a tight parking space while the car was still in drive and the damn thing locked up on me.

The second time happened when I was trying to back up a yard trailer into our tight driveway and was trying to see that I wasn’t running over the flowerbeds.

I think all Jeeps after Yelchin got run over have the standard stick type gear selector.

Get you one of those GM trucks with Super Cruise. What are people doing behind the wheel that they need both hands, eating a cup of noodle soup?

Ever car manufacturers are designing our vehicles to protect us, from our many faults. It may save your life or someone in your family.
How many times we forget to put the brakes on, or put it in gear, etc, when we get out of the truck.

I still do, I’ll put my brakes on , try to get out, the truck “chimes” Need to put in park.!

“Faults”. We all got them! Sad to read when a parent lives a child in a “hot” car. I hear there are cars being built to alert you.

The push button is just trying to make our life easier!
I must say , the rear view camera and sensors are a blessing.

You try to walk away from your truck when its in gear? This sounds like a "you problem", not a problem with keyed ignitions. The push button start is certainly making life easier for those the want to relieve you of your truck, come to think of it, you can't leave your truck in gear if you no long possess it so I guess it does work.;)

 I have seen people eating on a plate while driving before though

For me it’s it’s not so much behind the wheel needing hands free vs getting in and out

saint277. , yep it’s me, not the push starts. Sometimes we have so many things on our minds , when we attempt to leave quickly , we forget!
But though the safety features , it help to remind us. Was that my fault?

One day the truck will run by recognition lol. We won’t need keys or buttons, just talk to it! Better yet “self driveling. I wonder what that would be like off roading too.

I mean, with a keyed ignition you can't remove the key without putting the truck in park. I have never intentionally gotten out with the truck in gear because of this feature. So it would seem that the keyless ignition is what's allowing you to get out in the first place, so the chime is solving a problem unique to keyless ignition. Maybe you should go back to a keyed ignition, ya know, for safety.

Really go back to keys? I love the push button start. Do I forget things ? Sure.

How do you know ,you can only removed the keys in gear? Unless you tried? Lol.
    Maybe get a push start?

Was tensioning a winch line, wanted to leave it in neutral, couldn't remove the keys. And your the one talking up safety features not me, you seemed really excided about them, so was just pointing out that a keyed ignition is safer and you might prefer that.

And thus the reason we dont need to make it simpler, but make it where people have to become more engaged in driving as opposed to eating dinner on a plate.

I got nothing against things to make it easier, but I dont want it forced on me. I always felt my wifes old Suzuki Grand Vitara had the best idea, push button door locks or use the key, or the fob, you didnt have to have the key in the ignition if you had the key on you. Just turn the ignition and it started. Without a key, no go.

Since my new Tacoma is army green and has a manual key I thought I would give it a boys name like Butch or whatever but found out it is a girl truck as it has a wife feature, whenever I change lanes without signaling it beeps at me, so maybe Rosie after Rosie the Riveter, at least it doesn't beep at me when I do rolling stops, which is like every time, as that would be a bit much.

What I’m leaning towards now as a compromise is the push start and and a pull rope somewhere for emergencies. You know, like a lawn mower start

I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would need to back up with the drivers door open.
