I do that all the time in my other vehicle that I use for towing. I jump out several times until I have the hitch where I want it. My legs are my backup camera.

Push button start is a necessity. Once you go to a push button start and the credit card key then you cannot go back. I have a CT200h PB and credit card key. I specifically bought a Tacoma that had the same push button start and added a credit card key. The credit card key essentially makes your wallet the key. You never forget your wallet as you cant start your car without it.
I will never go to back to a car that does not have the same kind of PB and credit card or smaller setup.

I love the push button start and even more so after doing the “Lexus credit card key” mod. Never leave anywhere without both my wallet and keys. That coupled with the door handle unlock makes getting into the taco and driving away a pleasure

Apparently you have never had to back a utility trailer, travel trailer, gooseneck, 5th wheel, or anything substantial into a tight spot.

Actually there was a work-around that if you had the seat belt fastened, whether in front or behind you, you could still back up with the door open. I still wanted a Tacoma.

I did it for a living for years there is nothing you can see opening a door and looking back that you can't see with your mirrors. Not to mention when you look back you have a tendency to pull the wheel the way you are looking. Dump truck and pups, lowboys, roaded cranes, scrapers nothing to substantial if you need to open your door to back up go for it, but you should really learn to use your mirrors.

I use a double hook steering wheel lock because I have heard that this could be an issue (I already had the lock from a previous neighborhood that I lived in).

I’m really interested in the CC key - I will definitely be looking into this.

You can deactivate the key fob rf signal (ie the door handle touch to unlock) by locking the car with the remote, then holding the lock button and pressing unlock twice.

You will then need to unlock the car with the remote or key. Works on wife's Rav4 too.

Good to know! This is a great tip - I’ll be trying this when my truck is back from the shop.

Do you have the option set where the key can be recognized anywhere in the vehicle vs just in the drivers seat?

Very cool - I used to work at a large nation-wide used car dealership so I knew about the “prox box” idea - disrupting the signal - I didn’t know about the RF disable feature though.

    I only learnt it recently.

We've been on the road for 6 months and the keys for both of our cars are inside our travel trailer typically <10 feet away from the cars with a bit of MDF and plastic in between them. Being able to disconnect the signal is great peace of mind.

OP you should do a PSA and add this link to your original post and explain how to disconnect the RF signal...

I can honestly say that I've never done any of those things. If you have, or are doing them on a regular basis then you may want to seek help.

On my Silverado and my F-550 I've disabled the warning chimes because they annoyed me (my Silverado would chime to tell me it was low on Washer Fluid) plus both trucks tow a lot and it's common for me to jump in them to move a trailer or a piece of equipment without my seat belt on and I grew tired of hearing the stupid chime during those times.

As far as driving engagement goes, I have seven cars and trucks which range from a '63 Datsun to a '22 Ford F-550. Personally I feel a lot more engaged driving my older vehicles then I do my newer ones. That's actually one of the reasons why I bought a M/T Taco; because the auto ones I drove just felt a little boring to me. Since my Taco is not my DD I want to have fun when I do drive it.

Seriously though, if you are exiting your truck and not remembering it's in gear, please stop driving and get checked-out. You may have larger issues then just being annoyed that not everyone see's things your way.

There’s a ton of misconceptions being thrown around in here. Some of them by people who don’t actually have any experience with the system and are simply justifying their aversion to change.

You can start the car without depressing the brake. Hold the button for what seems like forever. Not convenient, but possible.

You can access the same ignition modes as a keyed vehicle by pressing the button with your foot off the brake.

You can shut off the engine while leaving it in acc by pressing the button while in R or N or D.

You can disable RF transmission with three button clicks. Someone posted a video and described the process above.

You can unlock the door with the KEY included in every fob by using the KEY HOLE in the handle. This one made me laugh out loud...

You can start the vehicle when the fob has a dead battery. You press the button with the fob and it starts.

There’s plenty of people with legitimate gripes about push to start, but I felt the need to address these non-issues.
“It’s less secure” or “I like the tactile feeling of turning a key because I’ve been doing it for 50 years”
That’s all you need to say.
Totally valid justifications without bending over backwards to dream up a situation (that already has a solution) to defend your fear of something you are unfamiliar with.
That or “Gerald Ford came to me in a dream told me they are evil”

Some of the replies of those preferring the keys to push-button are just comedy gold. From having to press the brake, to feeling in tune with the car, to your family getting kidnapped, to needing two buttons instead of one, to your truck getting stolen super easy, to not starting if battery dies, to forgetting your purse with the key fob inside.
I think none applies to the Tacoma except maybe the stealing your truck with an RFID signal (which is preventable by putting your fob in a faraday bag or turning fob off).
Is just a freaking button, you push, and you go. Is not that complicated.
