Why don't people like the push button start?

I'm willing to bet that there are maybe one or two people that genuinely chose a key over the button - one out of fear, the other out of preference. Then there's the majority of people who bought the key simply because it was part of the trim level that they bought, and yet, here they are, defending its virtues as if they all actively chose to not have the key. That's the part that I don't get. I guarantee that 95% of the naysayers here, had they bought a trim that just happened to come with the button instead of the key, would be staunchly defending their line in the sand over team button instead. As if it were their choice all along. It isn't.

I'll readily admit that I bought my trim level because that's what fit my budget, and it just so happened to have a button. Cool. Sign me up for the button army then. I'll stand my ground as if the one and only thing I ever looked for in a car was the button, and the structure that surrounds that button is more or less inconsequential.

Because that's what TW is all about. "My truck that I randomly drove off the lot came with a scoop. Your scoopless hood is stupid and will fold in half from the lack of scoop reinforcement." "Oh yeah? well MY truck that I randomly selected came with a key! Enjoy the roving gang of cyber criminals that follow you home every night! The poke I feel in my jeans pocket equals security!"

I'm not opposed to new technology, I'm just glad that Toyota still allows us a choice. As I said earlier in this thread, had my M/T Taco not been available with a key, I still would have bought it. I was just pleasantly surprised that it used a key. I do wish that it was a laser-cut key like most newer vehicles use, but either way I don't mind.

I do think that something should be done to make push-button cars harder to steal. That seems to be a real issue since most people are not going to disable their key fobs or hide them in a faraday bag nightly. That to me is the biggest issue with push button start, but again would not stop me from buying one.

Since I never bothered to learn how to program the VCR I am better off with a manual key.
Except now I have to call it a manual key, not just a key.
Life only gets more complicated not less.
Next truck I get will start only when I think it to start.
Now that would be an improvement.

My last tacoma had a key. This one has push button.
My keys never leave my pocket when I'm in town now.
So much so that when I went out of town and had a rental car I had a moment of panic each time I reached for the door handle and it didn't automatically unlock due to my proximity, thinking I locked myself out of the rental car.

Oh man hitting skewps now? Be careful some of these guys live and die by the flat hood! Lol
You hit the nail on the head. When my first gen was totaled; I didn’t have rental coverage, needed a new vehicle and didn’t have time to wait and see or “custom order” one and wait months.
My options were base model 22’s or 1 of 3 used trucks in town for (edit) around the same price with higher trim. I don’t buy new, one used was beat to shit and one used was out of my price range.
That left me with a single choice. I still don’t like the color, skewp or bed length, but I’ll make do because they aren’t deal breakers for me. Keyed or keyless, it’s still what I wanted and I’m not going to pretend like it’s better than the other option just because it is what I have

The scoop adds like 50 bhp.

I will say that in most modern cars even having a key doesn’t mean that you were manually starting it because all you have to do is flip the key into the start position and the starter will run as long as it needs to get the engine going.

By the way, that’s not the case of my 2013 4Runner which will let you run the starter motor and engine at the same time. While that’s not good, it does help you if you sputter when it’s extremely cold, which has happened like twice when I’ve owned it.

    I honestly don't care.

I do prefer to carry the keys for my wife's 4Runner than I do the keys for my MT Tacoma. Both have become muscle memory and don't put much thought into starting or stopping either.

The only thing I actually dislike are the buttons or dials for gearshifts that some cars come with. Just seems annoying to me to push buttons instead of just knocking the shifter into D.

Its not like the key is connected by cable or anything. Its all electrionic trigger, push to start or with a key.

Two downfalls of push to start I can think of
    1. Having to push the brake to start the car.
    2. wondering where they keys are while driving the car.

I don't like the fact that I have to close the door and press it like 3-4 more times to get the truck to shut up if I open the door before I turn off the engine.

I also don't like that I have to hide or disable my fob, and carry the tiny key if I want to go swimming.

I can open the truck with the key, but I can't start it with only the key. I have to then locate the fob and use the fob or re-enable the fob to start the truck.

Also, if I start the truck and step out it starts beeping like crazy. So then I have to throw the keys inside which means I don't have my keys for other stuff, unless I remove the key from the fob, and yeah here we go with a bunch of needless steps.

That's really my main complaint about the keyless entry/start button system. It makes it easy to lock/unlock/start the truck but it makes getting in and out and doing actual WORK (connecting trailers, unlocking, loading stuff) more of a hassle.

Also, it makes the truck FAR easier to steal.

A retarded one. There isn't a single piece of evidence that Toyota or anyone else I know that can justify why they went with rear drum instead of discs short of cost reduction. There are several Tacoma engineers I'd like to punch in the fucking face for their choices to do the shit they did to the Tacoma 3rd gen. The first is the upper control arm bolts. Fuck you to that team and the second is the rear drums. Whichever team said that was okay can die in a fire.

There is a fairly good solution to jump starting a car that you can get hood access from. If you were able to fashion positive/negative terminals on the undercarriage that you can access, then you could do the hookup that way.

    You have options ppl!!

I bought a non push to start Pro on purpose. No sunroof, no safety sense, no smart key fob & no push to start. Imo I think they’ll last longer & have less problems. Easier to modify, harder to steal. Yes, I bought a used 2015 inferno 4Runner but I also bought peace of mind since I live in a city!

I also have two 4.0s now!!!

I actually told my sales rep that I didn't want pushbutton start, she looked at me like I had lobsters growing out of my ears. Don't think she had ever heard that before.

My 2015 is just the side rails. The FJ basket that comes on the new 4Runner pro’s isn’t my thing. That started in 2018 I believe. I bought knowing it’s a 4.0, like my 2.5 Gen, hoping it lasts 500k miles. My 08 Corolla S has 225k miles & the starter is being annoying. I’ll replace the starter but I won’t dump much more into my Corolla at this point. So I bought a used 4runner with none of that new shit tech. No chance I can use an app with this baby! For me, I like that
