Pressing the brakes first is a good safety feature. A good habit to form. Really is it that hard to learn ? Just two steps? Press the brake, push to start.

Today the push buttons are tomorrow “keys” .

I am not saying car keys for starting a car is “bad”. Being driving cars with keys since 1968. No big deal.

I just find it more convenient, easier to use then keys. I like this new way to start a car.

I don't have an issue with my push button start. I like it but this video got me introduced to this guy. Now I watch his comedy stuff. This is hilarious:

I prefer it, and when I've had a key start as a rental (Camry SE) it really highlighted how much quicker and easier it was vs. the physical key. My wife REALLY likes it as she never has to take her keys out of her bag.

As for their reliability... ‍{shrug} we had it in our 2010 Prius and it lasted the 10+ years with zero issues that we had the car. We have it in our 2016 RAV4 and it's never given us a bit of trouble.

My old Miata has a physical key and the number of times I've forgotten it and left it in the ignition in the garage is too many to count. I'm so used to just pushing that "off" button while I grab my phone and whatever and get out of the car. So it's one extra step that can hang you up if you are in and out of the car a lot.

I understand prefering a manual transmission, or a manual transfer case lever, but I really don't understand what makes a physical key compelling or enhancing to the driver/car relationship in any way. ‍Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I really don't care either way, but push button looks like the future. As long as the car starts and gets me and my family to point A,B, or C safely no biggie. I have only had a key, so push button would be odd to me at first, however I am sure it would become very normal after a few days...

This Taco is my first push start. At first I sort of hated it cause was not sure how it worked but now after a few trial errors love it.

I own an early 60's Datsun which originally came with a hand-crank as a back-up to the electric starter. The one which came with my Datsun was lost long ago so I'm working on fabbing a replacement one. if I like how it works I plan on making them for modern vehicles too

Personally I prefer having a key but had my M/T Taco come with a push button start that wouldn't have been a deal breaker. I'm glad it didn't though.

My wife’s Camry needs a key in the ignition to start. We have other car keys and years ago multiple keys on the fob.
Ever find your self inserting the wrong key? I did a few time, never broke a key in the ignition, heard a few people did?

I talk to my daughter “what she thinks of the push button starts? “ She has one in her 2019 TRD. She said easy, no need to keeping search her purse.
Then she said “ My whole house is push button.” We do not need to carry keys anymore. Our phones opens the doors to everything now!

while interesting, you'd have to go out to the car every time you wanted a hand job. Or figure out how to get the car into the bedroom. Think I'd rather have the standard, dumb cars we had before they started trying to make them smart and one of the flesh cylons from BSG. A #6 or #8 would do fine. Maybe one of each. Easier to get into the house than the car.

The world is changing, we longer need to grow our own food. When a battery was first use to start a car, did they miss the crank? It was so much simpler to crank, didn”t need to worry of dead batteries.

The key is our crank today, now we do not need to worry about having a key.

When my daughter said “NO keys for the house.” We just use our phones. I laugh at my self, the world is changing, I been left behind…..

But you could be missing out on being one of the hero’s when bad stuff happens and you have a key and everyone else is holding their phone and their dick, or something. :notsure:

Nothing like not being able to get into your house or start your car because your phone has no signal. Because that never happens.

    Smart technology has become dumb.

One can have a key, but you need the right one. The phone can be program for many different locks.
Days of carrying multiple keys is gone. Yes there are “master keys”.

I like when hotels uses a card on the doors, no keys. They are easy to re-program. No lock smith needed when the key is a lost

When the kids came home from school, they would call out ,” Please Dad open the door.” I didn’t want my young kids carrying keys to the house.
I install a combination push button lock. Each child had their own combo numbers. You could give a guest their own combo numbers (note you can change every combo numbers any time) .
Each child were able to unlock the front door lock w/out keys. Hurrah to push buttons.

See my earlier post about the hand crank I’m fabbing for my ‘63 Datsun 320.

I used to run my whole house from my phone, but found the novelty soon wore-off. Plus phones can be lost or get broken. Keys too I guess but I’ve never had to worry about the battery in my house key going dead o_O

    Because it’s not convenient.

You pull a key out of your pocket and push button to unlock your car or manually unlock your car, you get in the car, you put the key in and turn it to crank.

Now instead you have to take out your phone, hope you have service, hope your phone is charged up, use facial recognition which doesn’t apparently work when it’s really bright outside, you’re wearing a pair of sunglasses where the camera can’t see through the lenses, or you’re wearing a mask, or a winter hat, or the collar of your winter jacket gets in the way, so now you have to fumble with the six digit security code…

And let’s not forget Toyota, of all car manufacturers, has an ongoing problem with remote starting with 4runners where the vehicle is essentially left inoperable if there is some type of bug during the remote start process.

If you have a dead battery and can’t operate the door locks, and your car has no external physical lock, it is quite possible that you will not be able to open the car to pop the hood to jumpstart it. Some cars can be jumpstarted through the cigarette lighter with limited success, but that’s beside the point.

I think being able to get in and out of your car is a critical function and automation just leaves too many points of failure.

Ask for push button start, and my mom keeps her key fob in her purse separate from her keys. She got into her Grand Cherokee, started the truck , thought she forgot something at home so she went in her home with her purse and her keys, left her purse on the counter because she got a work call, left the house without her purse or her key fob but with her house keys, went to the mall, turned her truck off, and found that she can’t restart it because the key fob is in her purse at home.

The car can drive with no key fob inside it once it has been started, but the minute you turn it off you’re shit out of luck.
