I don't see much discussion on TW about upgrading from a Tacoma to a Tundra. Why not?

Some people have. There's nothing wrong with a Tundra but for me it's just too big and I don't have a need for a full size truck. Plus a comparably equipped Tundra is outta my price range..

Since Tacomas maintain their value so well, used Tundras can be had for comparable prices in many cases. In fact, I was looking at trading in my Tacoma and found that Tundras may be worth exploring due to their used prices. My primary reluctance is the higher fuel costs.

Well what’s your reasoning for considering a Tundra? Do you need to tow more weight? Carry something slightly heavier? Or do you need more room for your family? If yes to any of those things you should get one. If you don’t need a bigger truck than why even ask the question? If you WANT a bigger truck buy it.... my last 3 trucks were 3/4 Ton American trucks and all were great. I actually wanted a smaller truck because it fit my current needs and lifestyle better. If a bigger truck suits you buy it. If a smaller truck suits you keep your Taco. It kind of all comes down to need or want and only you know the answers to those questions.

Oh and if you do use your truck to offroad keep the Taco, While in reality full size rigs aren’t THAT much bigger. They sure feel that way to me.

Because the site is called Tacomaworld.
I’ve had 2 Tundras and 2 prior Tacoma’s. Now on my third Tacoma. All of them 4x4’s. I loved the roominess of the Tundra but I like everything else about the Tacoma.

It depends on your needs. In 2007 I no longer needed a full size and traded my Crew cab F-150 for a Tacoma. It is a darn good truck and I still have it. But I reached the point where I needed more room, towing and payload than a Tacoma was capable of and bought another F-150 crew cab 2 years ago. But we kept the Tacoma as well.

At the time I was shopping for a 2-3 year old used truck and Tundra was at the top of my list. Unfortunately there simply were none available at the time that met my criteria. I'd do internet searches for trucks within 100 miles and come up with 6-7 possible Tundra's, and 150 possible F-150's that were close to what I wanted.

I like the Tundra but I don't need one. That and when looking at full size P/U trucks I like the 3/4 ton models over the 1/2 tons. If I buy a 3/4 ton I should just a 1 ton. If a buy a 1 ton I should just buy a 1 ton and order it with a Vulcan bed. That's why I don't talk about Tundras. They are nice though.

I don't NEED it. But if I moved up the line, it would be due to price and power. Moving from a 4 cyl. to 8 cyl. truck would be enticing for a heavy-footed guy like me. However, the truck is too big as a DD, especially for city driving.

Just wondering if there's any love for the Tundra. It seems to be a natural upgrade path for Tacoma owners.

When looking to replace my 2007 2nd Gen Tacoma in late 2015 my distaste for the 3rd Gen Tacoma redesign, and non-availabity of a new 2015 2nd Gen on the dealers lot, caused me to look at the half-ton market, I never considered it for one reason...fuel economy. Several friends with Tundras loved their trucks, but hated their MPG numbers. My current fullsize V8 crew cab truck gets as good average MPGs as my 2007 4cyl 5spd AC Tacoma ... and better towing MPGs. But it ain’t a Tundra.

You put tons of miles on em or wreck em? That's a lot of trucks in just 23 years of production

Tundra only has those fancy auto mat tic transmission things.

Honestly, think yota makes great vehicles, but the Tundra is an oil tycoons favorite truck due to its gulping of the petro. If I needed or wanted a full size, at this point the Tundra would not be on that list.

    Not everyone needs an 'upgrade'.

Bigger isn't always better. I find the 3rd gen Tacoma too big, and even my 2nd gen is bigger on the exterior than I'd like.

I don't need more power or more TCO.

However, if I did need to tow big, Tundra would be on the shopping list, but not a guaranteed winner.

I like Toyotas, but I'm not blind to other marquees.

Just buy a nice low mileage first gen tundra. It's almost the same size as a turd gen and it can tow more and actually has balls. Plus it's a small v8 so mileage is ok.
