the straight 6 in my 97 TJ runs as well as day one. It's sounds like a small v8. I would not dare crawl the same rocks I run in my Jeep in New England in my tacoma.. unless heavily modded/armored.. and it would get hung up bad with the IFS.

The 4.0 probably matches anything Toyota ever put in their SUV's/Trucks.

Having owned a number of FJ40's, I was never THAT impressed with the reliability of the engines, they were an ancient design with a partial filter system far after everyone else went to a full filtration system. They had their share of head issues, valve problems, a lousy oil pump drive design and more. IMHO, the Jeep 4.2 was as good a design or better. The 4.0 was FAR better.

I've owned 2 Jeeps back in the day. Glad I did. That was when I was younger and wilder. I wouldn't want to have done to a GOOD vehicle what I did to them. To say they were junk would be an insult to junk.....Only good thing to come out of owning them was I ended up with a garage full of tools and a LOT of experience spinning wrenches. Since the Jeeps, I've owned 4 Tacoma's and a Tundra. Assuming there will be a NEXT 4wd, it will PROBABLY be a Toyota, and DEFINATELY WON'T be a Jeep. No plans to own another Jeep in this lifetime. Jeep says they're a legend. I say they're a myth.

    Buy a Land Cruiser.....

I've got my tacoma and the girlfriend has a 03 tj rubicon. The tacoma is hands down a better daily driver then her jeep. Roommate also has a 2012 jku rubicon. Drove that from Alabama to Chicago and ever since that trip convinced myself ill never own a jeep. If the current girlfriend ends up being the one then she can drive a jeep and ill stick to trucks. The amount of room i have in my dclb compared to both the jeeps isnt even a close. The conclusion I've come up with is they are for different purposes and comparing them is apples to oranges.

My sister in law bought an Orvis i think it was one of the most expensive ones in those days, big V8 ,leather seats, etc
It did nt took long that it was falling apart.
Seats looked like they were 20 years old after about four years, very noisy, etc etc etc
She was putting money in that thing you would nt beleive.
I would never buy a Jeep, after owning so many Toyotas in our last 18 years.
That is me and my wife are driving both Toyotas.
    Cheers

Bought a 2008 JK Rubicon new. Kept it for 5 1/2 years, was great on the highway, no louder than my 2014 Tacoma. Tacoma is more comfortable to ride in on long trips and a bit smoother. Got top dollar for the JK when I traded for the Tacoma. Seen as many problems with Tacomas as I did with Jeeps. No issues with the Jeep in those 5 1/2years. If I had it to do over I would have kept my Jeep. Let the bashing begin.

Crappy old jeeps are the best kind!!!

Them newfangled tupperware looking JKs that are mostly plastic are just another SUV
The TJs are great if you have to go on the highway with it, if not go as old and simple as you can. Its a blast.
Put the top on when it gets cold, pull the carpet and leave it off all summer!

What keeps me from a Jeep?
I gots to haul a 40' ladder daily for work.

Well I've got both a 2015 Taco, and a modified 1988 YJ with a 4.2 lower, and a 4.0 upper which makes it a 4.7, with a Ford 8.8 posi rear axle, and a posi Dana 30 front axle. The exterior, and interior are done in bead liner. I Love my Tacoma don't get me wrong, but there are places I go in my Jeep that I wouldn't even consider in a Tacoma. DSC02840.JPG2.JPG22.jpg
