Yup absolutely. That is one of the reasons it doesn't bother me on the Tacoma.

All I need to do is look at some of the used car lots around here.
They are full of jeeps, that should tell you everything you need to know.

No. Just no. Sales-wise, the Wrangler is being sold faster than they can make them. In fact, it's selling faster than the '16 Taco, despite it being the 'new Taco' and the Wrangler hasn't been refreshed in almost a decade.

They also hold re-sale value right up there with the Taco. Jeep has 65.6% of its value after 36 months, while the Taco has 72.9%.

    http://www.kbb.com/new-cars/best-resale-value-awards/best-resale-top-10-cars/

I'll buy that you don't like Jeeps, but them being undesirable or not selling well is 100% not supported by facts.

    EDIT: Mixed up a number!

Then yeah I'd agree. I wish they had kept it going. I don't know why they decided to get away from it. I was very sad.

HOWEVER, there is a massive after-market for re-manufactured 4.0Ls - or they also make them into 4.7L strokers - for $2-$3k. Whichever Jeep I do end up getting, mileage isn't going to be an issue, b/c I have ALWAYS wanted to drop in a re-manufactured one of those bad boys! That'd be a great project!

I drove a Cherokee in high school that had the I6 4.0 and it was awesome. Lots of torque and it and the transmission are the only thing that never broke in 250k miles. That being said, if the 3.6 they are using now proves to be reliable, I would put it at a close second. I was very happy with the power in my wrangler.

Oh I'm watching this story carefully. However, the latest word is that it's not going to be based on the Wrangler platform, after all. We won't know anything more until next year - hopefully soon!

I might be wrong here, wasn't the 4.0 a redesigned engine that was simplified off the original 4.2 (jeep) by Chrysler? The 4.2 was a problematic engine, 4.0 was solid though. If the 4.0 was still around, I would probably have a Jeep SUV now.

The 4.0 was developed by AMC before it was sold to Chrysler. It was an evolution of AMC's 258 4.2 motor that was produced from '71 to '90. I ran a 258 in my '85 CJ with zero issues. I'm not aware of any reoccurring problems it may have had.

I'm pretty sure you're correct. The I-6 4.0 was a very good engine. I was in a Jeep 4WD club for several years and gained a lot of experience working on them about 20 yrs ago. The 4.2, not so much.
I also remember when they changed over and started having quality issues. However, I haven't worked on one in a long time so I'm not as knowledgable about them today as I once was. The 4.0 was easy to learn and parts used to be reasonable to replace.

Having had probably 13 Jeeps over the last 27 years, and at times traded them for Tacomas and vice versa, I liked the looks & performance of the TJs (had several Sports, X's, and Rubicons, AT & MT) the most, but it lacks the room & comfort for any reasonable road trip. I picked up a 2012 Wrangler Sport last spring (2-door), just a base model AT with no frills other than A/C & cruise. I just can't seem to be w/out a Jeep for some reason. Wheeling it in the San Juan mtns around Ouray last summer, it did tremendous for a base model/non-Rubicon. One trail never even required 4wd where previous Wranglers had...and driving to Ouray was a pleasure. The CC rarely downshifted the transmission, and the comfort level was fine on the highway. As much as I liked the TJ, the 3.6 & new AT are infinitely better in performance & usability vs. the 4.0L & the 42RLE. I can finally see this being the last Jeep I will buy. But, if it came down to a choice between the Wrangler & my Tacoma, the Jeep would be gone.

My girlfriends father has a Jeep Wrangler as his DD. That thing breaks down all the time. It might just be him though...

My father has an older Cherokee, not sure what year. It's a cool little rock crawler and I think it's better than Tacomas for a lot of off-road applications but I'd never DD it.

I do really like my tacoma as a DD and for its off road capability. I would never take it most of the places that my dad and I take the jeep, but it just depends on what the primary uses are.

I also learned to love Jeeps first on the 4.0L. So mechanically simple! I absolutely will have another one some day, and will likely drop in a re-manufactured 4.0L so that I can keep using that motor for years to come!

    Awesome! Thanks for your input!
