I beat the living shit out of my 2001 TJ almost every weekend for five years and the only thing I ever replaced other than fluids and plugs was the factory sway bar links.

Gotcha. As is all Chrysler transmissions. The company has such a hard time with their transmissions they have already hired outside help to give them better designs. Anyone who has owned a 2500 ram cummins knows they built a solid ass truck around a crappy trans.

Had a jeep xj 95. Was stolen two months ago and totalled. So much for completely restoring. What a waste

My 2500 gas job needed the rear seal replaced at 50K. It's been a fairly poor truck to be honest. I know it's not everyones experience with the truck though.

That's too bad. I know Chrysler in general isn't the most reputable but I always saw it more toward the patriot, neon, compass, and lesser models. I have never personally had problems with my jeeps and a lot of my friends don't see issues with their jk's as well and we wheel them pretty hard. Usually the issues we see are from aftermarket parts and joints, not driveline/electrical issues. May be a thing of the past.

I see the 4.0 L tj power plant the same I see the Toyota 22re. Bulletproof!

Was at an oil change shop today getting some fluids changed on my work van. Guy next to me had his newer lifted jeep in for an oil change. Overheard the techs say they only drained a litre and a half of oil from the thing and it was dirty as hell. Was pretty surprised to see a fairly new Jeep burning that much oil. The owner was obviously neglecting it but still. As I watched him drive away I noticed he removed his spare tire from the back. I guess the guy thinks Jeeps don't need engine oil or spare tires. Freaking Jeeple man.

Fair enough. I would say though that even Jeep fans will admit they can be a bit of a headache long term. I'm not sure what year you owned your 01, but the only Jeep I would want is a TJ (personal preference for the I6) and a >10 year old Jeep would of been a money pit even if I kept it just on the road.

All of the failures I've seen have just reinforced my position. Not to say that Tacoma's don't fail but I don't see a whole lot of Tacoma's needing nearly as much work to keep them trail ready.

Sold this to get the new Tacoma. I took my Tacoma to a little wheeling spot up the street from my house to test out the crawl control, a place that my jeep could go without even picking a line... and I did a bit of damage to the 3 day old Taco. Ripped off the front license plate holder and "chin" plastic, smashed the crossover exhaust under the truck, and drug the tow hitch around like a plow.

So yea, the Jeep was a much more capable crawler. The taco will never get to this point, unless you put high clearance bumpers and lockers, chop half the wheel wells out, and don't mind tearing it up.

But I drove the Jeep out to Sedona, and was exhausted by the end of the 7 hour drive. 16mpg with 35's, so mileage wasn't that bad. Stay away from the 3.8. Literally 95 horsepower to the rear end. (never re-geared) No wonder mileage is ok.

The trans was starting to go on the Jeep @ 53k, clock spring was broken, and the last wheeling trip was gonna cost me new trackbar heims, so on craigslist it went. Re sale value was ok. Taco's are still the king in that regard.

That's why I wanted a TJ. To be honest I still sorta do. A guy I used to work with, his wife has a minty fresh 2003 TJ in white. I'm sure if they sell it one day for the right price and I'm done paying off the Tacoma it'll end up at my house. Even with the potential cost issues it's so easy to sell a TJ in good shape they are worth adding to the fleet.

In one month on a 2008 limited, your friend had to replace a power steering pump, an idler pulley, and rebuild his transmission? Brother, your friend must have been pretty shitty to his vehicles. Trying to say that somehow I'd have to replace all of those things on a Jeep is just silly talk. Like I said earlier in the thread, I have owned 32 Jeeps, and I have NEVER had an experience similar to your buddy's; however, I always take care of my vehicles well. Does your buddy have a thread describing said problems, by chance?

This is my experience with Jeep. Mine have always been bulletproof, although I also take very good care of them.

Oh you... always the contributor! :)

    Sorry to hear that!

LoL I feel like you have had some other negative experience with Jeep people in the past. Did one steal a girlfriend in HS or something? I feel like there's something deeper here...

The TJ's are cool because you get the I6 engine, coil suspension and removable top all in one. I'd only get one in addition to my Tacoma but never instead of my Tacoma.

My point wasn't that every Jeep owner will have to replace those parts or those parts on that time frame. Rather it was to say that, in my experience, I've seen enough Jeep failures that had nothing to do with the trail that I'm personally not a fan of their reliability. I'm glad that your Jeeps have done well, almost 3 dozen of them, but that doesn't change what I've seen and heard from real people in real Jeeps in real life. I mean that with no offense ;).

Yes, said party has a build thread on a private club forum. Most of the story was by text though. He even lost the pump in a Canadian Tire parking lot and had to strong arm his Jeep out of a parking stall because of it :(.

lol not really. Jeep guys are alright, it's the dodge pickup guys that tend to be the total asshats around here. I did know a guy in high school who's Jeep burned to the ground about a block away from our high school but that's about as far as that goes. The worst part is our fire department is across the street from our high school.

To be totally honest I've just never been a fan of anything dodge related. I do see why people buy jeeps but I'd never buy a dodge/jeep/chrysler product myself but I guess to each their own.
