Currently I have a 2005 Wrangler, 2000 Cherokee, and a 2015 Tacoma. I like them all, LOL. My mother recently purchased a 2015 Wrangler Unlimited Hard Rock and I like that think a lot! They are much more comfortable than my 2005. The Tacoma does have a more comfortable ride to it. If I could only have one either a Tacoma or Wrangler Unlimited it would be a really hard decision. I've always had Wranglers so I am a little partial to them, so that would probably be my choice. Maybe once my lift comes in this week for the tacoma and I get it all done I will change my mind. I live in Ohio so I don't get to have the top off as much as some of the more southern states. If I were further south my choice would definitely be a Wrangler.

It replaced the piece of shit 2.8 V6 that AMC used in 1984-1986.These were in the debut Cherokee and Comanche models.Too bad Comanche was the red-headed stepchild of Chrysler, and they did not market them well.Dakota took that limelight.I bought a slightly used 1986 Comanche with a V6,that was a dog.I test drove one when the 4.0 came out,and got a 1989 with the 7' box/metric ton package.Had very little problems with it,only real problem was with a weight sensing brake valve in the rear brake system.

You know they're coming back with a Jeep pickup in 2017/2018? It's already confirmed, but no one knows what it's going to look like.

They're also coming back with the 'Wagoneer' - it's going to be a large SUV with a third row. No clue as to what that's going to look like yet, either.

    Super nervous.

Not really. The 4.0L was developed from the 2.5L 4-cylinder, which came first and was the first to use the new cylinder head design that later allowed the 4.0L to make more horsepower and torque than the 4.2L.

Actually, @Arailt is correct. The 4.0 was an evolution of the 258, using the original 232 as a starting point (same as the 258) but with more modern components. The 2.5l 4-banger was also based on the 232, and designed around the same time as the 4.0 (also using more modern components), but it didn't influence the 4.0's design. Both motors were designed in-house by AMC.

The 2.5L was designed and built three years before the 4.0L, and uses the small GM bell housing because Jeep was still using the 2.8L engines in the Cherokees at the time. Both the 2.5L and 4.0L share the same bore spacing as the older engines, but that's about it.

    I was being facetious.
    Was.

    :D

Yes, the 2.5 came out earlier, but the 4.0l wasn't based on it.

On an unrelated note, I helped a buddy of mine build a Jeep I6 back in high school, using the crank and rods from a 258 and the block (and maybe the pistons? I don't remember) from his stock 4.0
He was convinced it was making more HP, but I never noticed a difference. :notsure:

The part of the engine that makes the 4.0L more desirable than the 4.2 was based on parts developed for the 2.5L. Aside from bore spacing and the number of cylinders, the 4.0 shares very little with the 4.2.

And the only thing that it shares with the 2.5 is the head chamber & porting design. The 2.5 is basically a 258 with two cylinders chopped off and the different head.

Umm.. less stroke, better oil pump, MPFI, better cooling, better valve cover sealing. Yeah, only two less cylinders and a different head.

Cylinder heads are what make or break engine's performance, by the way. That's no small change.

These things are true. There are many small changes between the 258 and the 2.5; that's generally what happens when a design evolves. But they're still based on the same motor, the old 232.

Argue all you want about design changes, the 4.0L wasn't based on the 2.5L
If it'll make you feel better, I'll concede that the 4.0L and 2.5L share a chamber and port design, and since the 2.5L came first, we can say that the 4.0L head was based on the 2.5's.

Regardless, it's irrelevant to the OP's question since none of these motors have been made in 10+ years, so it'd all fall into the category of 'derping' unless he goes with an old Jeep and ignores everyone telling him to fork himself. :notsure:

To be fair, there are already several dozen threads on tacomaworld regarding the third gen issues. Huge oil consumption, failed rings, ring land issues, ATRAC issues, bearing failing, shocks leaking, etc.

I know we will all day it's the first year and it will work itself out. But really it's the same and there is no sure way to tell if those issues do go away with the next few model years.
