Well I guess what bothers me is the comments about how Jeeps stopped being Jeeps after they killed the TJ. However more JK wranglers are sold each year since 2007, more than TJ's. I also see more JK's off-road when I'm at events than I see Tacomas and TJ's combined.

    Just saying....

"Jeeps stopped being Jeeps" in 2007 to most die-hard fans for a number of reasons.
First, Chrysler made them much more user friendly by adding power amenities and optional four doors in an effort to make them appealing to a broader market, which worked, tenfold.
Second, they replaced the tried and true, torquey, bulletproof 4.0 that every Jeep fan loved with an underpowered minivan engine (sound familiar).
Third, most of the JKs on the road are Unlimiteds and 99% of the people who drive JK Unlimiteds are middle-aged soccer moms (yes, I'm exaggerating).
Fourth, the Jeep wave is slowly dying thanks to the aforementioned JKU demographic.

Of course there are more JKs on the road than TJs. They're newer, easier to drive, have more amenities, and have been in production for more than 10 years now.

That said, I would rather have my 2001 TJ than a brand new JK any day of the week.

An '85 CJ was my first vehicle at 16 and I've also owned a '99 XJ and '01 TJ.

The exact Jeep I want is a TJ Unlimited(2dr) 6spd 4.0L Rubicon. Good base for a weekend exploration rig. I just can't justify $8k-$15k for a vehicle that isn't a brilliant daily driver. It would essentially be a "toy" rather than reliable comfortable transportation.

And good luck finding a 2004-2006 TJ Rubicon for under $15k with reasonable mileage. They're all $16-$22 around me.

I know guys who've bought 4.0 TJs with 150k+, but if I was buying one I'd want it to be unmodified and have less than 70k. The closer to 50k the better.

To me, Jeeps stopped being Jeeps when AMC stepped into the picture. I had a '74 CJ5, then bought a '78 CJ5, and later a '79 CJ7. First one was bulletproof. Next 2 were like they got shot at and missed, then shit at and hit....Junk was too nice of a word.

    I just sold my 2004 TJ Rubicon w/ 128,000 miles for $12,500....

The biggest reason why I sold it was purely because I didn't want to drive it. I wanted to offroad with it, but it was going to sit around. It was far too nice of a rig to sit around and not get used. I think I'm going to go the route of a cheaper TJ and build it a little (try and keep it under 10k built) or go with a JKU sometime in the future. I have a trip in April coming up and I'm having some serious anxiety over using the truck vs taking the Jeep. I'm worried about all the little things that happen offroad and I don't think the Tacoma is going to be the right fit.... too long of a wheelbase for northern MI woods, too little clearance for rutted trails.... we'll see

lol I know I just commented on selling my '04 TJ, but I just did the same thing. Bought it in September 2015 for $12,500, sold it this week for $12,500... I lost the cost of an oil change, gas to run it 3,000 miles and registration. It was fun to play with and ended up being a very cheap toy in that time.

But it took until 1977 before AMC's influences took over on the CJ's. The '74 still had a Dana rear end (instead of the piece of crap AMC "corporate" rear end) , a rigid frame, a Borg Warner 4-speed tranny, and parts that didn't fall off in the driveway.
