    What I did in my house is I bought some routers for ~$25 on ebay and convert them to bridges using DD-WRT firmware, now I have coverage in all the house including the backyard, works great!

    Cool, never used tomato so I can't compare, but I didn't have any problems setting it up, it was pretty straight forward.
