I was at my mechanic's shop when he was putting it back together and I never had a problem with the rack and pinion! I trust my local mechanic.

I used to do my own oil changes but this is right you really don't save much money especially for the effort required. Dealing with the mess etc

You might be surprised to find that Toyota recommends.... Toyota oil, 0W20 synthetic.

    Made by ExxonMobil apparently.

Mobil 1 does deals and gives you $12 Rebate on a Jug and a filter is less than $4, not a bad price and gives you the chance to inspect things.

My issue is my custom Skid Plates. I'd have to pull the Mid Plate, take it to the dealer, bring it home, re install the Mid Plate. I bought a Fumotol Valve, but not sure what the dealer will think of it, or do with it.

I'm at the dealer now getting my 25k service. I've had them replace the front diff needle bearing twice here as well. The bathroom is always clean (I'm currently pooping), they have a great coffee bar, and it's flipping freezing outside and I don't have to do the work. Don't get me wrong, I can do my own maintenance as well, but why? Now, if you'd excuse me, I need to wipe, and then maybe go get a latte.

Just like many things at the dealership - it's optional. 36 more months and the toilet paper I used will be paid off! :)

You can use any oil you like....use an independent mechanic if you want, or do it yourself, it WILL NOT void warranty.........see Magnuson/Moss Act.

Yep. Just ensure you keep records/receipts to prove you performed the recommended services at the appointed intervals. My 2017 owners manual specifies ILSAC GF-5 grade oil, so I'd be prepared to show that as well just in case.

Now just for grins, the M-M language prohibits tie-in sales and they can't require factory parts/supplies *if* they charge for those. So that raises the question of whether the "included" nature of the first oil changes gets them around Magnuson-Moss? While they can't legally require you to use them if they charge you, can they require you use them if it's free? I don't know. Curious if anyone's really explored that legal nuance.

On my previous Tundra I never used TC. On the wifes current RAV4 never used it either. I enjoy doing all the services on my vehicles and knowing it is done completely and right. I don't have any issues with my local dealer but I just prefer to do it myself. I will do the same for my new Tacoma and follow the DIY route.

I'd rather do it myself. It's only an oil change, really. they don't rotate the tires or grease the zerks. or check the tranny, even if you ask them. A little chalk mark on the rear tires, and a chalk mark on the tranny bolt told me that. almost an hour to drive to the closest toyota dealer (under 10 miles with traffic) just for an oil change is not worth it. I'd rather spend the hour taking the skids off, checking everything underneath, make sure it's all ok rather than sit in traffic for an hour.

Took the Taco for ONE Toyota Care service. They lost my oil cap.

Took the Highlander for ONE Toyota Care service. They didn't tighten the drain plug. (Lost 2 qts on the way home).

Needless to say, I haven't requested their expertise since.
