Should I still go ahead and switch the winch? Just want to ask again before I work on it this weekend.

I think you've collected all the info at this point - and it'll be up to you to decide if the tradeoffs are worth the hassle.

Alright, I'm going to do it this weekend and will take pics.
Having the rope come down off the top like that just looks too risky for me to leave it as is.
    Thanks for the help, guys!

Damn wires are too short (and one's got a random slice in it ).
Gotta redo some wiring, but otherwise the line actually seems a bit low for the fairlead. Luckily no rubbing on the bumper hole edge, and it's a much smaller angle than when it came up and around, so life is good :)
Oh, and the clutch is just as accessible as the other way, so it didn't need to be clocked like it was originally. XRC 10s would need the clock, but not the XRC8s.

Sweeeeeet. Just finished it all and got it reattached to the truck! :woot:

While it was all off the truck:
    1) Sealed up the solenoid
    2) Cleaned and regreased the gears with better grease,
    3) Rotated the motor housing 90 degrees to make the wire connectors closer to the solenoid box so I didn't have to buy new wires
    4) Clocked the winch 180 degrees on reinstalling into the bumper so the line comes out on the bottom of the drum.
    5) Moved the solenoid box to the other side of the bumper to fit the wires.

Lots of work for me, but I'm glad I did it all. :)

BTW, here's the thread with instructions for sealing the solenoid and cleaning and regreasing the gears: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/of...ur-smittybilt-xrc8-solenoid-before-fails.html
