Just installed the weather-stripping recommended by the OP yesterday evening and noticed a bid difference in road noise while driving into work today on the beltway. Wouldn't go as far as to say it's a 15 dB reduction... But I did notice I was able to listen to a podcast on the crap OEM speakers at volume 12 on my stereo instead of needing to turn up to 16 to be able to hear. Tweeter and front door speaker upgrades are looming...

I used a stick to push a 3/4” pipe insulation up the gap between the cab and the bed. It took just a few minutes, pretty easy. I can tell the difference before and after. All I can hear now is the engine acceleration noice. It’s a 5 foot length <$3 Home Depot purchase. I am quite happy about it. Thanks for sharing the mod.

Looks like 3M sent them a cease-and-desist letter, because the 3M brand has been removed from the title

I tried this today. My rear doors were pushed out toward the top near the back. Noise wasn't much different. I used the stuff linked on the first page, am I missing something?

I don't think you're missing anything. The only thing this did for me was to make it harder to close my doors.

If you really want to lessen road noise, putting sound deadening material on the insides of the doors is much more effective.

If one is going to the trouble to place sound deadening material in the doors, then I think it would make sense to put it on the back wall of the cab as well.
I'm not an expert here by any means, but the road noise excites the backwall, and the backwall becomes it's own "pseudo amplifier" of road noise.
That is evidently why people are putting pool noodles between the cab and the bed and claiming that helps things.
Placing the sound deadening material on the wall should change it's resonance properties... much more effectively I would think than a pool noodle.
Oh heck, while one is at it, one might as well put deadening material under the carpeting and fill. :duel:

I don't think some folks understand how much 15 decibels is. If you did, you'd realize no way would weather stripping cut that much sound in the cab.

I would think there is less than 15db that separates a Bentley from a yaris at 70mph

Here's hoping that some of the people who tried the pool noodle between the cab and bed are still reading this thread.

How is the noodle holding up? I read about some concerns about possible paint damage. Has anyone noticed this?

So I just took mine out today, the noodle was clean, no real sand or dirt on it, but a ton of wet nasty leaves fell out when I removed it.

Not often, but over the summer I did a bunch. When I removed the noodle, there were marks where the foam didnt conform to the back ribs in the bed, so when it rained any dirt was getting washed out.

This thread finally suckered me. I saw a length of pipe insulation at Ace for 3 bucks and thought, screw it, why not.

One month later, eh, it does dampen some of the undercarriage rattles and road noise, but not necessarily wind noise. Sure, the door mat did way more, but for 3 bucks, it's a win. At least until I get bored enough to buy more mat and line the rear wall.

Wait, take me to your leader. Whats the door mat trick?

That would be taking the door apart and lining it with two different types of sound mat. :cookiemonster:

Huge difference in both ambient noise and speaker performance.

Ohhh OK yes I think I used Dyna or Noico on mine for that. I thought you meant literally using doormat material somewhere.

Every 6db increase, you effectively double the sound.
If you have 6db road noise, at 12db, you have twice as much, and so on.
40db plus another 6db, doubles the noise, it’s not what you would think, like 40db plus 40db being doubled..
I do ultrasonic weld inspections, and 6db is always the doubler for amplification on an oscilloscope.

This would be my concern as well. You would have standing water sitting between the noodle and the cab and bed where there is most likely only light paint.
