What do you mean by 'it crashed'?

The key you were using is still good, if you can find the correct disk somewhere you can use your old key.

Note that the default download is for the upgrade to windows 7 Home Premium. To get the upgrade to windows 7 Pro, sign up for the Home Premium, and after you get your email link there will be a yellow box under the Pre Order button that says:

Need to join your school's network domain? Click here

Click that and you can get windows 7 Pro for the same price, since Premium can't connect to a domain. This is really a disguised link for you to get the Professional version for the same price

All I need is a basic OS, just something to run the internet on

Since I am basically starting over with a new OS will I be able to save this to a disk so I can boot from the disk to start up on my home computer?

My guess is that it will allow you to download in ISO format that can be burned with NERO, or some other disc software. This image is a bootable image.

This is an upgrade, not a full install. From what I have read you can upgrade from an un-activated version of XP or Vista, but I have not done this.

If you are upgrading from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS, you will get to download as ISO. Otherwise, you will get an executable file (With an option to buy a backup DVD).
