Ive noticed recently fine marks on the exterior of my windscreen, looks like marks from sand/gravel?
Is there a solution to this?
    Anyone else experienced this?

Some professional detailers offer glass buffing services that will remove minor imperfections in the windshield. I do not recommend doing this yourself. If you don't have training/experience with this you can ruin the windshield.

Mine shows quite a bit of pitting like that. I think I will probably just go with a new windshield.

Really!? Can it be from road grit? I was thinking it was an optical illusion.

Nope, normal with our trucks, soft glass coupled with the angle. My NJ, IL, AZ truck all looked the same after a year of regular driving (AZ truck alot worse).

FYI- Replacing a 3rd Gen Tacoma windshield with the safety sense stuff with the calibration and OEM windshield will cost about $1500 at the dealer and $800 (non OEM windshield) at Safelite. Safelight does the re-calibration with a year warranty. This may be common knowledge, but I was shocked. Change your insurance comprehensive deductibles now if they are high.

My 2003 bought in 2006 certified in So. Calif. was very pitted. Originally from Arizona (land of sand). Didn’t notice it until nighttime city lights when it was almost a driving hazard. Dealer refused to replace it, offered me a free oil change instead, heh. Never heard of a buffing service. My bro said a new one won’t look pristine for long with freeway driving and all.

Soft glass. Toyota doesn’t make the glass. If you look in the corner there will be a decal to tell you the manufacturer whether Pilkington, PPG, United etc.

It all depends upon where you live. I haven’t had the first issue with pitting but did have issue with an owl.

I never said it was directly from Toyota, obviously its not, like many parts its sourced usually Plinkington in this case. But the glass is softer in almost all brands as they are all sourced and all manufacturers moved to acoustic glass, etc, its not a decal either, lol.

It does not depend on where you live, it depends on driving habits (i.e. highway driving, how close you follow, etc.) as well as road condiiton and enviornment. I've had 6 3rd gens, living in AL, NJ, AZ, IL, MS, PA, they all have pitted.

Tough luck man. Guess I’m fortunate not to have issues with pitting. Only the owl that caused serious pitting with feathers embedded in glass.

The fine pitting I’m talking about doesn’t really even show up until you’re driving into the setting sun or under certain night time street lighting conditions. Otherwise, it looks relatively un-pitted. Man…under certain light conditions, it looks massively pitted. Can that kind of fine pitting be buffed out by pros?

I've never heard anybody from the detailing world recommend it. It takes many passes on a rotary with dedicated pad and glass polish to remove wiper marks. Even scratches are a no go because it takes so much work to level the glass that pitting would be out of the question. Would be cheaper just to buy a new windshield.

Pretty much. My Taco is pitted and my wife's Subaru is really peppered. I had an old glass guy tell me windshields aren't what they used to be.
