I need a new windshield for my 2005 Tacoma, i called a local glass company and he gave me a quote for $235 for Toyota OEM glass. So to get another quote and i was thinking i would rather have the dealer put the windshield in the truck i called the Local dealer, they told me i couldn't get factory OEM glass from any one but a Toyota dealer, does any one know if its true or not? The dealer gave me a quote for them to install one would cost me $1,225. I dont think the dealer will be installing the windshield any time soon.

Just go for the cheaper one. 235 is a good deal for sure, (is that what you pay or total? insurance pay anything?)

Damn! Might just be me but hell no I wouldn't pay that much to replace my windshield... Haha! I had a few rock chips on the windshield of my '04 4Runner and went over to a local TechnaGlass and paid about $130 windshield swap installed. Doubt you have store near you though.

Good luck finding a good shop with a good price :)

No reason to pay $1225 for a windshield. I just had my windshield replaced for $260 and it's indistinguishable from the original. And the glass shop was able to take care of it the next day.

Windshields are not covered under your insurance? Mine only cost me the $100 deductible. I had a local mechanic replace it and have no idea what he put in but it's remained clear and leak-free for 6 years (I got a bolt through it the very first time I took it out on the highway).

If windshields are not covered by your policy, you could get a Safelight or glass.net quote for comparison to local rates.

We had one of the Tacoma windshields replaces around January 15, so, six weeks ago. It was not a "factory" windshield and was not done at a dealership but, we only paid $140. Now the good news, as is always the case whenever we have something new around our house, within a few days of having it replaced it found another rock and is cracked again!

My insurance would cover it but I have a $500 deductible, the windshield was half that.

They do, however, cover rock chip repairs and waive the deductible. I got a rock chip right before Christmas, had it repaired, and within a couple weeks had 2 more rocks hit the windshield, this time cracking it all the way across right through my line of sight. *Sigh*

I've heard that recently (not sure how recent) the insurance companies have been going to a "points" system so if you use comprehensive...so as you accumulate more points, your rates increase. Did you check with them on the repair / replace of the windshield and if so did this come up?

After that i was afraid to even ask...and for the $140 (which I didn't know at the time) in retrospect, it wouldn't have been worth it as my deducts are high.

In most places insurance companies are prohibited from raising your rates/canceling coverage just because you asked if damage would be covered.

They can raise your rates for too many claims though.

My insurance will cover the windshield,i have a $250 deductible,so i figured the windshield for the $235 was what i would do and not make a claim,Then my insurance agent pissed me off so i called the dealer ,i knew it would be more money at the dealer but after them telling me the price of $1225 i decided not to do that, going to call and have the cheaper glass installed.

P.S. my insurance co quit paying for the chip repairs,i have had it done on two different spots, then the last rock i caught caused the chips to hook up with crack all across the glass in several places.

This is why I never have mine replaced. I try to repair the chips/cracks as soon as I notice them, but I figure if I do replace the windshield it will just get damaged again. If the crack isn't in my vision I just live with it as long as I can (drove my last truck with a cracked windshield for 6 years then traded it in that way). Seems like by now there should be a way to avoid them cracking in the first place, but then how would glass companies make money?
