Wow - what a thread! I came upon it because I'm looking for opinions on size for an '06 Prerunner (TRD Off Road.)

I've got Hankook snow tires on steel rims and I think I've had them for about 4 winters now. I plan to replace them with Blizzaks. Hankooks were better than regular tires for winter, but not as good as some of the other winter tires I've used (Gisalved, Yokohama.) We got a set of Blizzak's for the wife's Subaru Legacy last winter and they are phenomenal! (Along with their AWD and ABS programming.) I'm planning on going with Blizzaks in 245/75R16.

The tires on it now are so hard that I have to feather the accelerator carefully on wet pavement to avoid wheelspin. With very little extra throttle I can keep a rear tire spinning just about as long as I want (and without breaking the speed limit :D )

I became a believer in snow tires years ago with my first 2wd access cab. Went out after a big storm, u plowed parking lot to trailhead had a bunch of suvs stuck, snow bank was high enough I drove by first while considering going in. Drove in and parked, sunk in about 4 inches after stopping. Got out and helped push 3 vehicles out of the lot. Came back an hour later, backed up and drove out. That was with studded blizzaks. Now I have snow tires every year even though I upgraded to a 4x4 taco. In fact I'm writing this as I sit in the waiting room having them swapped on right now :bananadance:

I have a set of Toyo GSi5 winters in 265-70/16". I have been using Toyo winter tires for 18 years and have had great success with the brand.

I’ve used Duratrac, studded Duratrac, BFG AT KO’s, BFG AT KO2’s, and studded cooper discoverer M&S snow tires.

The Duratracs all did well for the first year. After 10k mile they are NOT good in winter conditions. The studded coopers are surpassingly average in winter conditions and terrible on wet/dry roads. They also were JUNK after 8k miles and cooper would not warrenty them because they were studded. Will NEVER buy a cooper tire again. The BFG AT KO2’s have been very very very good for an All terrain tire and are useable in winter conditions but not a replacement for dedicated winter tire. I wont buy studded tires again, for next winter i plan to buy Blizzak DM-V2 tires to put on 3rd gen TRD OR wheels I picked up and use my BFG AT KO2’s though summers till they are done.

This is a great test. Very fair and comprehensive. Compares studded snow tires, studless snow tires, *snow rated* AT tires, mud tires, and OEM all season tires. It was particularly interesting for me because i was comparing BFG AT KO2 (snow rated all terrain) to the Blizak DM-V2 (studless winter).

If you are not driving on ice a lot, check.out Toyo Observe winter tires. They are not as Blizzaks, but don't wear out prematurely on dry pavement, and cheaper.

Haven’t seem them before. Discount tire direct and tire rack both dont carry them. For 265/75r16 the blizzaks are $135 each on tirerack (before shipping). The only place i found the Toyo was at 1010tires.com for $151 before shipping. Do you have a good source for them?

Put these on our 2nd gen in 2012 so this will be the fifth winter on them.
They are still amaze. ABS and Traction control very rarely come on, and never by accident..

Tire shop owes me some money off for damaging my other set of custom wheels. The guy I was working on was out on vacation and the guy I was working on was a dick bag. Busy with Midterm exams now so I will probably get it sorted next week or whenever I happen to have time. It'll probably be spring at this rate.

What do you guys find the best works for all around tires. Winter and summer ? Located near Albany Ny if that helps. Just picked up my 16 Tacoma this past Friday ordered a 3 inch lift and looking like tires and wheels are going to be on the list. Truck will be used for some light off roading at the moment and dd 5 mins to work and back home and the occasional run to the store

    Thanks for the input
    Sorry for the newb question

I was curious as to what other on here run for snow tires? And how they are in slush. We get lots of slushy roads here and I doubt my stock all seasons can handle it

Michelin X-Ice. Great tire, and I live in snowy, slushy wet, freezing, icy, sleeting southern Ontario. Blizzaks are popular. Personally, I worry more about stopping than traction. 4WD helps with traction, even with stock tires, but not so much with stopping.

Iv'e used Goodyear UltraGrip Ice with good results. Good traction and stopping.
This year I'll be using studded Mastercraft Courser MSR on my new 3rd gen for it's first winter.
