Finally bought a winch, Superwinch Talon 12.5 SR, currently on sale through their site, $933 OTD, almost half off.

Sweet! Now I can rely on your fancy winch instead of replacing my horrible sounding shittybilt.

Haha, pretty much. I think you need to take that thing out back and put it out of its misery.

Enough to make it a lot of fun!
Brett doesn't have the guts to put it down. He cars about it too much.

No. I think it's a horrible winch, but it works, and a new one is expensive.

What's so horrible about it if it works?

Typically, that's my number 1 criteria for rating things.

Brett's makes some truly awful dying dinosaur noises. I would suspect it is on it's way out, but who knows, could run for another few years like that.

@Squeaky Penguin ever pull it apart to clean/regrease it?

Let's dive deeper into this subject on James' build thread

 This is the most accurate description of the noise I've ever heard. It makes a really loud rattle, and by rattle, I mean it kinda vibrates the whole truck.

FWIW, it's the old generation shittybilt that they haven't sold for many years.

And yes Eric, I've taken it apart twice to regrease and seal it.

It also needs a new rope, but I don't think the winch is worth it.

There are some great deals going on right now from Superwinch, and as a side to that, it looks like they have discontinued the Talon series which I just bought, and released a new lineup.

So this happened in Moab last fall at the top of a big climb, went to stop and the pedal went to the floor

Luckily parts stores had one and I swapped it out within hours, had to drive back to camp without brakes, luckily not too far and no major obstacles. Finally replace the other side with shitty rubber ones this weekend.

DO NOT buy StopTech SS lines, shitty design that put too much stress and kinked them. Really glad this didn't happen on the highway or further into the trail.

I think that might have worked, really pissed me off at the time, had just driven out there and setup camp and we were only 15 minutes into the trail. Ironically the same trail I below my diff up on (Behind the Rocks) so I have some bad juju going with it, still haven't done the whole thing in 3 attempts now. Here is the hill but I took a steeper line to the left, made it to the crest and nooooo brakes. Put it in low and carefully made my way back to camp.

I think for an LT setup they might be OK with a longer length, it was the fault of the support at the base that really just makes the line shorter that is the problem and excessive angles/flex.

FWIW I bought from Autoanything and they are giving me a refund.

Holy shit indeed, could have been waaaaaaaay worse though, so Ill take it. I will probably go back to SS at some point, but have the rubbers on there for now.

Scary shit, brakes are one thing I don't want to fuck around with any sort of failures.

While I am updating, going to be taking care of a few things here shortly, on the list for this weekend is cutting out the fender supports that are giving up the ghost and welding some new shit in, hopefully won't be too bad of a project but we will see. Then need to mount the winch and make some updates to the bumper mounting situation for max strength, also have new rod ends for all my links on order, went with Ballistic this go around.

Found my CV/diff seal is leaking too while crawling around under the truck, was fine all summer and fall, not sure what is going on there. Been having a pretty good vibe at 45-55 that I diagnosed to be driveline or diff related and pulled the rear drive shaft this weekend and have been driving in FWD and it seems to have gone away. There are a few dents in the shaft along with one sort of deep candycaneing, so going to have it retubed and balanced this week.
