Embarrassingly (or not), I could be a poster child for HF. Tool cart, bar stools, jack, jack stands (both 3 and 6 ton), impact wrench, etc. And of course all the freebies strewn about the garage. People talk crap about them, but I have yet to have something break.

It's how you measure how much you tighten a bolt. Some stuff needs to be super tight, whereas other stuff doesn't. It's measured with a torque wrench.

Torque values = how tight is tight.

HF sells a serviceable torque wrench for $9, for lug nuts and suspension bolts it's perfectly fine.

@MuddyJackson - This is a great list to start from. I started with everything on this list the first year I owned my Tacoma. Look through the scheduled maintenance items as well. There are good threads here that can walk you through all the routine items. I only have 35k, on the odometer, but a couple other things I've done:
    -Grease driveshaft zerks
-Clean/inspect brakes - greased caliper pins (wasn't really necessary, but I wanted an excuse to familiarize myself with the brakes)
-Drain/fill tranny fluid - (again, wasn't necessary, was more interested in checking the fluid level and going through the temp check process.)

The best part of having a friend with experience to help is when shit breaks or goes sideways. They've been there and will be calm. Then you'll get to buy the parts and possibly tools needed to fix it. After the disaster is fixed you'll gain confidence to try again. It takes a few oh shit moments to get used to the surprises of working on your own stuff.

I would say also fear the day you get a problem and you throw hundreds of dollars possibly thousands at it, plus blood sweat and tears and the problem persists.

My family has owned a few dodge and Chrysler products. Mystery problems out the ass. The latest was a 90 Honda crx. Kept blowing coil pack. At 500 a pop it got real expensive real quick. Replaced 5 of them In 3 months.
