Not trying to be preaching but do you have access to the maintenance schedule manual? Keep you from having these kind of surprises on things that are easily preventable.

U joints aren't that hard to replace. Do em yourself, save the money, and learn something in the process. I helped my buddy replace u joints in his ranger in 20 minutes(including beer drinking).

U-joints don't last forever. If I get 100K out of mine I'll be happy. And if anyone was wondering, only the 4x4's have greaseable zerks. The other Tacoma's have non-serviceable u-joints. People will argue over which ones are better... But I don't think it matters too much.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
ha ha they last 100K when you dont lube then :D If you lube them they have no end day 100k 200k 300k whatever the day is. On 1 gen some people have 300K on the same u-joints and still going, but they grease them.

If (when) my prerunner ones give up due to no zerks then ones with zerks will be going back on. I would bet all kinds of money that they fail within 2 weeks after hittin 100k since I'll be the one payin for them after ext drivetrain warranty expires.:D:mad:

update: they are working on my truck as we speak, toyota gave my gf two u-joints but my truck needs three, and they are too big. so im returned them to toyota, i got em for 45 ea. regular price is 75. mechanic ordered the three i needed from napa, 15 bucks each. haha plus 60 dollars to install since i was too lazy to go to tijuana to get them done. border waits a pain.

Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
Maint free joints are good till their seals fail and loose grease. They tolerate running in water better than greaseables. Individual results will vary, but grease is cheaper than new joints;)
Make sure you mark the shafts to keep the same phase. If you put them back out of phase it will vibrate.
