Just to be terminology clear, your transmission does not use an oil, it uses a transmission fluid.

While it is liquid, it has a very different chemical composition than oil.

I mention this because if you are in a parts house, some of the keyboard jockeys might get flustered and bring you the wrong stuff.

BTW, I support the method @Key-Rei suggests. Have done it several times on high mile vehicles with great success.

And yes, your trans has a filter that should be replaced. If your current fluid is still pretty pink/red and smells decent, I'd wait and do it right before your last drain/fill. If the current fluid is dark or has some stink, I'd do it with the first drain/fill.

I hit 190k. I just did the fluid change for the second time. My mechanic said my old fluid didn’t appear that dirty.

I did a drain and fill , and dropped the pan also at 120k and mine shifts smoother afterwards . I thought it was ok before the drain and fill but after there always a noticeable difference

Who shit in your cereal, man? There most definitely is a wire mesh filter in there.

It can be cleaned but is kinda a pain and replacement is cheap. Wouldn’t recommend RTV here just get the gasket. Also, doing multiple drain and fills is a waste of time, unless you’d be watching Fucker Carlson on the tele otherwise haha. Doing a proper flush where you first drop the pan and then use the transmissions own pump is pretty easy and replaces all the ATF in one go.

agree also , but just emphasize the use of the transmissions own pump and not a actual flushing machine . Op might miss that possibly

Or would you want to change the filter after the flush so you don't get old contaminates into your new clean filter?

I have an '06 with 170k miles on it, unknown to me if the previous owners ever drained it but I would be surprised. I am not having any symptoms whatsoever from my transmission. Do you guys think it would be worth it to drain and replace the fluid and filter as preventative maintenance?

Any suggestions for transmission fluids that can handle temperatures that get down as low as -50F in the winter and as high as 90F in the summer? Also, looking at Rock Auto there's a lot of brands to choose from for filters, is there an aftermarket brand that you'd recommend?

Nice mileage there, congrats! Did you swap the filter too? What did you put in for ATF?

Toyota fluid, no filter change. Another month or so will be doing about a 1000 miles a week.
