Would you guys buy this for your truck? I'm curious as to how many people would actually use their tablet as a head unit and what other functionality would you try to get out of this?

I'm planning exactly that.. Doing a mini iPad to an outboard processor.. Digital from stem to stern. I think it actually looks gorgeous in a tacoma dash.

I checked out their products and I couldn't find anything for the first generation. So I'm thinking about 3D printing a prototype for a in-dash tablet mount for my truck.

SoundmanCA (Doug) will build you one into a scosche or similar aftermarket bezel.. That one in the pic I posted started out as just the iPad tray kit he sells custom fabricated into a bezel.

His kits are designed to be custom done into about any dash bezel where they can fit. Warning.. Lots of fabrication time and skill involved.. Be ready to break out the wallet. Chaching! $$ Which is why I'm doing it myself in my 2nd gen in some aftermarket bezel.

I'm sure it gets quite expensive for all of the custom work.

    OR you get a http://pixen.net
they don't have one for a tacoma yet but Shok industry has been communicating with them about potentially getting one that would fit into the tacoma.

Benefits ? Well it has a built in dsp and a TON of other already included features.

I'm doing one now for a first gen Tacoma. First one I've seen, had to relocate a/c controls and 3D print some stuff to hold it. Currently body working panel. Ordered iPad mini 3 today in black. Should be nice. I've had this setup in my land cruiser as well. This time going all digital and hope to have awesome sound quality.

That looks pretty damn good. I might do it a little differently though. I will upload picks as soon as my design is done. Nice work!

I really disliked how low the stock radio sat and figured since I was going to chop it up anyway might as well relocate. Climate control harness reached new location just fine too. Having done a few of these one thing I've learned is it makes for a much better experience to use a cellular model. You can do wifi only and use a bad elf and teather to your phone but the bad elf can be touchy at times and not connect. This setup is going to follow the latest setup Doug Bernard is doing in his F100.

If you had one for the Nexus 9 I'd be interested. Apple doesn't belong in the dash of a vehicle for a variety of reasons. Android is really the only way to go. For example, you can't even change the home screen layout on an iPad.

I make these for the 2005-2015 Tacoma radio trims. They turn out pretty awesome.

    17562E9F-010B-493D-8AF6-B69170A5B963_zps_83e49f6795c406845616cf85338676f419f36ef2.jpg

They are 100% ABS using 3d printed parts and plastic-based bonding / fabricating methods. Slide-lock replace/removal design, suede-tex lined tablet contact areas, fixed place lightning cable. Link in my signature to the product info / purchase thread.

im personally not a fan of ipads in the dash either. I think there are better solutions. The reality is that Ipad stays in your truck 24/7.

There are some downsides to the iPad, but compared to conventional head units, I'd take an iPad any day. The retina display and familiar user interface really makes it awesome for me. I also take my iPad out every day and still use it at home and at the office.

i do understand that.... id just rather use a 10inch TFT screen on a carputer or a nexus 7 even. But then again id rather go with one of the pixen units as it has a SO much to offer and will be cheaper in the end especially considering it has a built in Dsp already but thats my 02. I can see the need or want for the ipad though
