    Absolutely.

Love my truck. Only things I might want to change are minor and cosmetic.. Wheels/more aggressive tires, or if as an 18 instead of my current 17, I think I'd be extremely tempted by the cavalry blue over my blazing blue pearl.

I don't like my new Tacoma, so I have to say no. It's the transmission/motor combination. It's huge, not a small item to overlook. If I lived where it was flat it would be fine. My older 4.0 was king.

No. Did not care for the way the transmission shifted going into a head wind or up a small hill.

Toyota had a winning formula with the 4.0 and missed the boat. All it needed was direct injection, port injection and a few tweaks here and there. Even the 5 speed was fine but I'm sure Toyota was afraid of getting crucified because everyone is gear horny these days. Gotta have 27 gears or I can't tow my lawn mower on my 5x8 trailer!

    Yeah.
The 4.0 is solid, but dated, along with the transmission. I've owned a 2009 and a 2012. The 3.5 is different and likes to rev a bit higher than the 4.0, but it's more advanced than the 4.0 and has more usable power where most people need it. Maybe not a lot, but it's there. Toyota sits on stuff for a long time with their trucks, but they eventually have to change. At least it's not a Dodge.

I remember everyone bitching about the 4.0 towards the end of the 2nd gen cycle. Complaining how dated it was. I loved it. I almost didn't get a 3rd gen, but my 2nd gen was 13 years old, it was time.

I actually like the 3.5 only a week into it. I was probably one of the bigger skeptic's on here before buying one. Even created a thread about it after test driving some 17s. My learning curve for this truck was super quick. I feel it gets up and goes if I want. It's got a sweet spot that'll lag which is annoying, it's got a spot that'll jerk you back in the seat making you look kind of like an ass. And there is actually a pretty good spot in between. Once I figured it out, I fell in love with the truck.

    Yeah.
LOL, I know what you mean. It's mostly mellow just tooling around, but if you get on it, it's got this middle band that gives your more, and then all of a sudden it REALLY goes. Still need to figure out how to keep it in that middle band, seems a bit narrow. I did some mild trails over the weekend and the power was always perfect, never really had to get into it. Had both a 1st and 2nd gen on the run, and they seemed to burn twice the fuel that I did.

Feather through the first 2-3k, then slowly step on it not letting it shift into 3rd, it'll get up and move very smoothly. It's a nice little band. Took me about a week to perfect it. Getting 20mpg also.

Most of the complaints about the 4.0 was people wanting the updated version in the 4Runner which also got better gas mileage than the Tacoma. It was dated but it would still whip the GM v6 and it's only real competition was the Nissan 4.0 which people still like.

Absolutely. Bought a 2016 sr5 thinking it was all I wanted, and ended upgraded to a 2017 TRD sport with all the tech. Bought the truck for reliability and utility, and towing (which is does very well) not speed or acceleration.
