Nut entirely true there are many 9mm rifles used by civilians a great example is the rugger camp 9 or an AR chambered in 9mm, not very common but not at all rare.

Here's the thing though Bronze , in this case you would only be comparing 2 weapons , not every weapon available in a given calibre , no ?

Oh look , there is 500 spent casings of this type , and one of this type , I wonder what happened ?

Agreed but when it's reported Bushmaster which is usually an AR platform 5.56 comes to mind

I would believe so, but it isn't there job to accurately relate that information to the people directly, from my experience the press I'd the middle man and like had been said before they have already given out false info.

    Yep

True, iespecially in the context of this debate. If he did use an AR then more then likely it would be a .223/5.56

Right, for the first 2 days we all thought his mom was a teacher at the school. No body has ever heard of her before at the school. SO that was pretty off. At first it was a glock and sig, ar in the car. Now there are reports he used the ar. Ill wait another day to see how it changes.

1,000's of if's. I'm just saying when I get a snippet of info and they are not precise then I assume the MOST common as a default. Which is my point of the conversation on lousy reporting by the media.
I have a photo that I can't post cause of size where a sheriff is holding an AR and the media reports it as an AK. If your going to report on something report the facts. If you don't KNOW the facts then don't report bullshit just to report something.

    Exactly.

And all the news agencies are forgetting rather then spending a shit ton of money on banning guns which will do nothing they should be spending that money on the root cause, mental instability.

    Correct

I was just correcting info about 9mm rifles being highly specialized and not popular in the civilian market

To add to the confusion...I read a news report somewhere that said he had 2 pistols (can't recall caliber) and a semi-auto rifle in the school and a shotgun in the vehicle (which could easily be misconstrued when LE reports a long gun in the car)

I don't think it's too suprising for some details to be misreported as a story develops , but at this time do you not think that they should have been able to determine which weapon was used ? I mean c'mon .

They probably have a good idea, but the agencies involved may be waiting to make 1 press conference etc when they have a bunch of stuff to put out...possibly focusing on the investigation and letting the families grieve and media do what they do

That's kind of the point, I am not trying to be political here at all, but if one side wants to push for gun control then they are going to WANT it to be an AR so they will sensationalize it as best they can. In this case if an AR was used it will be better for that position to report it that way.
But given that it has been 4 days you would think they would know by now, if I walked in there I could tell you in about 1 minute what type of ammo was used just by walking over it. .

I'm sure the PD has known the entire time, but the press knowing/reporting is totally different. Not to mention again my previous example of the Oakland pd.

It's completely unnacceptable for professionals to not be able to provide this info. Some are even still calling him the suspect. UFB!
