My dad used to have a straight 8 homemadehi stripped down buick go cart... it was just an engine, frame rails, and a bench seat welded to it.

It is interesting to see the differences here and there.

I noticed there is much more of an international flavor over there as well. The story attracted interest from folks in Australia, South America as well as many other places I'm sure.

oh yea lots of international people. Got a PM from a Swedish guy, he and his wife are shipping their land cruiser to the PNW and doing a huge trip all over for like 6 months. Hopefully meet up with him for a bit or something.

    Cool crowd over there though.

Woke up to an email saying that the syllabus is wrong and we are covering more lectures than what it says. This is partially my fault but damn. I wonder how many students are going to show up with out studying those chapters now

Hey guys, Im looking into buying a GPS, primarily for Search and Rescue, but for other outdoor pursuits as well, and I figured I couldn't ask a better group of guys advice about buying shit :p

Ive narrowed it down to two options:

    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/foretrex-401/prod30026.html

    and

    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-trail/handhelds/etrex-20/prod87771.html

I've had hands on experience with both, and both are used by members in my SAR unit. So far, I leaning toward the watch design. It is much smaller and convenient when dealing with ropes, litters, etc. however it doesn't have maps. This isn't a huge deal as I am primarily just putting in coordinates and will usually have a paper map anyways(which i prefer). The other just seems like it is more versitile, but less specialized. Thoughts? Do i REALLY need maps?

I knew a few guys that used the wrist style while deployed. They liked it and it did the job. Never messed with them myself though. I have one similar to the eTrex and I honestly don't use it that much. I pretty much only pull it out when I am completely lost to get a location for a paper map. The screens are so small that trying to view maps on them is near pointless.

Dang, I wish I could talk him into getting something else. He wants something that isn't to far from stock so if something mechanical goes wrong it wont be to hard to find a fix.

Plus, he hasn't got the bug yet. It's there though. He's always trying to drive my truck .

Maps are handy. Then you don't have to haul paper ones or worry about them getting soaked or something..Plus it'll make navigating much faster.

Id get the etrex like i just texted you. I liked it a lot. The bigger display is nicer, color screen, and like i said. Much more customizable.

But..from a climbing stand point..yea might be nice to have it on your wrist. But honestly id just have it on my pack strap. Its annoying to have on the wrist for a long time.

    least i thought so..

i liked the etrex a hell of a lot more then the 401. I used the extrex all summer, and the 401 for like 3 days. Soon as i switch from the 401 to the etrex i was like...damn this is so much better.

    But thats me! haha

Well I stole my ultra gauge back from my buddy to check and see if my speedometer and odometer are off due to my tires and gearing.

Ive read so many different threads of if tires and gears effect your odometer or not and they all say something different.

They both do but in different ways. Larger tires will make the speedo read low by the % increase in size over stock. Regearing has the opposite effect. Going from 4.10s to 4.88s made my speedo read about 15 mph high.

Tire won't affect it the way your speedo works. The gears will though.

But ultra gauge won't so you anything unless you calibrate it anyways. GPS will be better

See that makes sense to me..

I plan on using a GPS as well. Im going to calibrate the Speedo from Butte to Bozeman(longer for more accuracy) as well as compare what it says to the GPS and then on the return trip I will be able to compare this to my Speedo and GPS again.
