I am still on the hunt for that perfect vehicle. I have done my required lurking and realized that there is a lot of butthurt between Prerunner owners and 4x4 owners.

I'm not into wheeling at all. I have a hunting lease, but there are no bad roads there, and we don't have rock crawling, and I don't like sticking my trucks in mud.

Now that we have all that out the way, I am finding tons of Prerunners for sale. My concern is the Automatic Transmission, 4 cylinder with pulling a load. I don't want a V6.

All I will be hauling is a boat, and a double axle trailer with a mower on it. That's it. I used to have a 4 cylinder, 5 speed S10 and while a trailer was a load on it, it pulled it fine, I just had to be careful and gear down well ahead of red lights.

I've been wanting a 5 speed, 2.7 liter, but if I get enough positive reviews, I might have to consider a PreRunner.. What say you learned Taco scholars?

For what it's worth, the only reason I posted this crap in a forum already inundated with "PreRunner Suxors/4x4 Are Teh Awesome! threads", my question is regarding Automatics vs. 5 speeds with regards to towing.

Living in the mountains between Oregon and Idaho I can't for the life of me understand why someone would buy a 2wd. Is say if you are doing light towing once or twice a year go with the 5speed if you do a lot of rush hour stuck in traffic driving go with the auto. You should be fine either way it comes down to preference.

So you're asking about a Prerunner vs a 5 lug? Sorry I'm just a bit confused about what you're asking.

What is the difference between a Prerunner and a 5 lug?

And I don't want a 5 lug, they are uglier than my last date.

We have no snow. Ever. I'm near Jacksonville, FL. We have no rocks. We have a little gumbo clay, but I'm old enough to know better than to go off rushing to find some mud and water to put my vehicle in.

5lugs CAN be capable and look cool with tastefull mods...

    My truck started as a base 5lugger;

However if you lift it, you will need to regear! I had two ATV's and three guys in the cab, to go riding... Truck pulled fine... I also pulled a 5x9 uhaul utility trailer with heavy stainless steel fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher and it did ok. It wont be powerhouse, but does fine. I also was offroading with it, yet to get stuck... Granted I live in AZ... If there is snow, ice, mud, rain, sand... Consider 4x4 other than that 2wd is fine. I only wish I had a locker

Great, but is yours a 4 or 6 cylinder? Auto or 5 speed? This is where I'm at.. I think I want a 4 cylinder 5 speed manual, but there are so many good looking Prerunners for sale, that I'm considering buying one of them instead. However, I'm just wandering about the automatic tranny's capability compared to a 5 speed.

Durr, I'm an idiot. I just saw your sig. Thanks for the info.

Well I'm assuming because you know how they look you know the basic difference. Prerunners have 4wd suspension without the 4wd. Based on where you live and what you're wanting to do with the truck I'd say you be wasting money on a 4x4. You can get Prerunners with the 2.7L and the 5 speed.

    Bolded for emphasis...

Say what? I thought one of the downsides to the Prerunners were that they only came in Automatics! Are you sure about that??

Oh crap you may be right, I've seen them listed in places before but I just checked the toyota website and you can't have the 2.7L with the 5 speed in a Prerunner.

Hey Jonny, unlike the other Prerunner whiners, I have a legitimate question with regards to the automatic vs the 5 speed trannys. I could not give one flip less about 4wd or where I can and can't take a 2wd. I'm. Not. Off. Roading.

I'm sorry for all the angst. Where can I send the care package?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Personally, I'd buy a base 2wd automatic and put a transmission cooler and airbags on it. Unless you really want a 5 speed.

The 4 cyl 5 spd Prerunner was only available with the 05-10 model years. No auto was available. In 2011, the 4 cyl Prerunner was only available with an auto. Do not ask me why?
