I bet your right, the block has zero rust

 

Got the engine the rest of the way torn down last night. Very happy to say that the short block looks exellent!!!! There is parctically no ridge at the top of the cylinders and the walls are smooth! I did find some damage to the head gasket, there are some pretty obvious signs that it was leaking. Also the timing chain guides where broken, but the chain was not rubbing the timing cover! This is great news! Here are the pics.

 

One more pic of my pile of parts. Now that everything is torn down, I am going to begin going through all of these & cleaning everything, painting a few things & rounding up the remaining gaskets I need to get it back together.

for no T-cover chain marks. My timing chain is slapping the hell out of my timing cover. I ordered a new kit yesterday. I hope there is not to much damage to the cover.

 

Yes !!!!! I am very happy, the timing cover looks prefect! Even more important, the cylinder walls look great!

How many miles are on the short block to look that great? just curious, I got 135,000 on my rig.

 

The odometer reads 186K & they are all original miles. I am amazed at how good of condition it is in.

 

Oh, I see the problem.. that Freaking Fram filter! Good News Robbie, Good news.. did you get the title yet, sounds like you will need tags!

 

Yep, the title is in the glove box, give me a couple more weeks & it will have tags, inspection & insurance

Slave driver! I plan on cleaning everything up real good but prob won't port the head, might do the intake manifold though.

Nice! that tells me I have tons of miles left. My engine runs great right now but the timing kit will make it purrr like a kitten.

 

Have you read up on the timing chain replacement? It is recomended everywhere I read that you pull the head & the oil pan. I could hardlly get my timing cover off with out loosening the head bolts. The head gasket seals the top of the timing cover & the oil pan seals the bottom of it.

but luckily I have an experienced engine builder to direct the tear down and rebuild. I'll probably have to get some more gaskets, I dont think the Cloyes kit (9-4141s) comes with all the ones needed.

 

I read that write up before I started & fully intended at the time to leave the head on. I changed my mind after I did a compression test & I am glad that I did because my head gasket is damaged in a few spots & I would have had to tear it back apart later anyway.

 

I will definitely try to remember to check compression in the process. Do you know the correct psi range?

 

For a 22re it is supposed to be 170 psi, I think it is a little less for a 22r.

 

Other details, the oil pick-up screen is pretty dirty, I will def. clean it out good. The motor seems for the most part to be sludge free, there is an insignifigant amount in the oil pan but I guess the previuos owner did a good job of staying on top of the oil changes. I have 2 broken exhaust manifold bolts in the head that I am going to have to get out. I can't tell much about the crank or rod bearings just by looking but I have no reason to suspect there is an issue. I guess the only way to know for sure would be to pull the main caps & visually inspect the bearings. I am not planning to bother with it at the moment but I am still mulling it over.
