I was going to go that route, unfortunately 1st gen beds are super shallow, right now I have a bedslide. But I might end up selling that... I searched for a long time for side open tonneau covers that could hold a tent but no luck. I'd imagine a 2nd and 3rd gen aren't so bad with a tonneau.

RCI and RLD are both nice but what about alu-cab?

Congrats! Let us know how it turns out. I just opted for an ARE. Hoping I don't end up with buyers remorse after seeing yours.

I will, and I checked an ARE and for a few hundred dollars more why not go with stainless steel ‍♂️. I got quoted $3200 for an ARE which seemed really high.

Preordered and deposit made. The customer service has been amazing so far. RSI called me and connected me with a local dealer. Now the waiting game.

Let us all know how it turns out! I'm looking at an ARE DCU but this is intriguing to me. I'm not confident in how it'll hold up in the ice and snow, as it appears to have the same type of latches as Alu-Cab and RLD, which apparently freeze up pretty easily: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-in-the-usa-rld-design.593043/page-6#post-22103642

That was from a guy in WA, so I'm pretty wary being in MN. Crossing my fingers though, the more good quality options out there, the better.

I placed my pre-order today through OffroadAlliance.com, which is who regional manager for RSI sent me to since there are literally no local dealers anywhere near me. The modular/dissasembled aspect means it can be shipped direct to my door and then their videos show all that's needed to build it is a 10mm socket wrench and torque wrench. It does seem like a bit of a risk, considering the lack of reviews out there for Tacomas, though there are 2 reviews I found, one for an F150, and one with great pics for a Gladiator:
    https://www.f150forum.com/f7/rsi-smartcap-evo-2018-f150-review-473893/
    https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/smartcap-goes-on-new-jeep-gladiator-build.30495/

I had some concern also because the prototype that the regional manager was running on his truck (a 5' bed) was definitely too short on the tailgate. You can see pics and video of that cap on their Instagram account (rsismartcap.na), but they assure us the final shipped product will be 1.5" longer for the shortbeds, and their Instagram account has some great pics of that longer final product shown on a cement or silver TRD Pro. If this product is anywhere near as good as it looks it'll be worth the extra pennies and work to build and install myself. I think the concerns about the latches in cold weather climates are legitimate, but for the amount of times my truck gets iced up here in the high desert (rarely) I think it's worth the risk.

Fingers crossed, will post up pics once installed

Yes August. There was some talk at one point about short bed caps being delivered as early as July, but seems like they're walking that back.

I was told by Rick the regional sales manager that about 40 of them had just gone through customs and were being distributed out to a couple dealers. He then said 40 more each month until about October would be coming in but due to the pandemic those numbers could be different. Hopefully we all get ours soon!!

I officially ordered mine on may 12th through a local dealer so I won't have to pay for shipping to my house. So excited to have this thing, plan on building it out as a camper. Can't wait to see what all you guys do with yours!

Man if there is one thing that might make me go to a 3rd gen this would be it. That Smart Tray / Smart Canopy combo is super sweet.

The cap is badass and I'm stoked on getting it here in August. Although, if im ever stacked with cash I'm getting that tray/canopy combo. Killer stuff.

Hopefully people did their research before they bit that bullet.
