I am getting about 20-22.5mpg in my 2011 double cab v6 auto. It has the TRD package which doesn't affect gas mileage any and I drive in TN where its either 75-80mph on the hghwy or hilly backroads. I am more then happy with it...gets better mileage then my 2003 TRD Tacoma but not by much. And just as an extra note...I have always had higher gas mileage than what the government ratings state. I generally take their high number for my average.

My 2012 gets about two more MPG highway and one more MPG city than the 2010 I had and they are equipped the same with same tires and axle ratio, both TRDs but a different color. The color makes a difference. The Pyrite Mica will get the best MPGs where Black will cut you at least 3MPGs.Just Kidding guys. The only thing I can see is two little air dams in front of the front tires and a little different front design.I think they put 0W20 oil in the V6s even though the cap says 5W30 and that is where the gain came from. Can't prove it but I bet someone will.Toyota clearly states that there is a .4 to .6 MPG gain by using 0W20 over 5W30.
My TRD 4X4 access cab gets between 23 and 24 highway and 19 to 20 around town.Driving habits make a huge difference.

...curious if there's any "real" feedback/data from folks driving 2012s around yet.. ofcourse,.. i'd suspect that in the first several thousand miles, the MPGs would start out lower than post-break-in..

Reminded me of this chart I ran into today, it's the first link on this post:

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/99942-0w-20-1gr-fe.html#post4040322

I can't find the original forum it was on but I remember it was claimed to be emailed from Toyota of Canada.

My original guess for keeping the 5w30 recommendation was for the optional 6500# tow rating, but if that's the case then why does everything on the tundra including the newer 1GR get 0w20?

    I just traded my '08 DC 4x4 6spd for a '12 AC 4x4 6spd.
Got 16 mpg in the 08, getting 13 in the 12 (only 3 tanks).

Both driven the same, like there's a full glass of beer on the dash.

Mileage estimates/ratings seem worthless. Face it, we don't buy Tacomas because they're even moderately good at gas mileage.

Very interesting OP thanks for the find. I was reading that Honda tweaked very minor things such as oil viscosity etc. to get more fuel economy out of their new CRV which is mechanically identical to their outgoing model. So I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota was able to squeeze out some too.

More fanbois jumped on this thread I see. TW is going down the shitter because of spread of fanboism, the moderators need to rein in some of these goofs who jump at every chance to "defend" their trucks or put down more objective opinions or we will go the same route as thousands of other once-good car forums. "dont buy a truck for fuel economy" is about as relevant a comment in this thread as "i like pie"

I think they added a new anti-pollution device on the '12, but that is the only mechanical difference that I am aware of. Since EPA estimate using the stock tires, It might be possible that only changing tire size/brand could have that 1 mpg effect. Anyone know if tires on '12 are skinnier/less agressive/different brand?

I have a 2012 V-6 6 spd 4X4 and I get between 15 (in town) and 19.9 on the hwy (17.4 mean) with about 2500 miles. I traded a 2009 4 cyl. SR5 4X4 that got only slightly better mileage (up to about 20.4). So, my numbers are within the advertised range. I'm on Fuelly.com as shackman of you want to see the numbers.

Interesting. What about fluids? Did they change specs for oil, diff, t-case? Gearing? ECU tune?

1 MPG is 5-7%, which is actually quite significant in terms of MPG improvements. IF it is true, it's not as insignificant as people are making it out to be.

2012 dcsb trd owner. I've got 265/75/16 BFGs and a camper shell on it. My mileage has been steadily creeping up. It started off at 17.1mpg around town and with the most recent fill-up I got 19.5 mpg. I currently have 2,500 miles on it.

It's difficult to tell from the estimate if there is really any significant difference and the EPA site doesn't have any "real world" averages for the 2012s posted yet. The difference could be due to different testing procedures, something new in the 2012s, or even rounding of numbers (if you round to the nearest digit you can get "1" difference when the real difference is 0.49 to 0.50).

Speaking of something new in the 2012's, I noticed that there are some emission system modifications in the 2012 models. Look at this post:

I have a 2012 V6 4.0 engine. I keep a log (every fill up). Summer months almost 18 MPG. I drive 3 miles to and from a park and ride and errands on weekend. Just last week, drove all highway miles (260 total) and got 24 MPG!!!!!! When I drive strictly highway, I get around 23-24 MPG. Love it!!!
