2013 TRD Off Road, 4.0 liter 1GR-FE, V6 6-Speed Manual Transmission <-(A bit wordy/redundant but helps those using the search function) - This will work as a guide for all '05-'15 WITH OPEN DIFFERENTIALS.

Some '05-'08 require an LSD additive.

To me Redline has proved as a tried and true gear oil. That being said you should use what your personal preference is.

Are spark plugs needed at 30k?

 

Looks good to me!! your diff especially your rear diff will thank you so much. (I changed the factory fluid at 6k miles and it was DONE from all the break in) FYI i reused the crush washers and havnt had any leaking but its best to replace when you do it.

Also, UNDO the fill plug on any component FIRST before draining. Wouldnt want to drain then have issues getting the fill plug out!

yup every 30k for the standard plugs on the v6.

 

I figure I'll splurge for a nice 6 pack of Ninkasi Spring Reign or Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA and get-r-dun this weekend.

I'll update you all with the "total cost" of my 30K service once it's all done and I'm good and

I figure even if I buy the MOST expensive 6 pack in the store I still won't break $250 total.
I haven't seen anyone on here report their "cost" of this from the dealership - that's for a 1GR-FE 4X4 with a 6-Speed.

I suspect it would be North of $1000. Any shameful TW folks out there care to share what they paid for the aforementioned service from the dealer?

 

Man it's like you read my mind! I am looking to DIY my auto tranny 30k maintenance instead of taking it into the stealership. Will be going in to buy 6 OEM Spark plugs and some crush washers and walk out without a hole in my wallet! Thanks for the write up!
Invest in one of them Fumoto drain plugs, makes changing the oil a breeze even with a skid plate on!

Wix oil filters by the case from Discount Fleet Supply, $4 each
Cabin air filters, six for $18 from a source on the forum, so $3
Five gallon bucket of GL-5 gear oil, $75 or $30
Plugs from Rock Auto, $12
Mobil 1 from Walmart $30

Call it $80 for supplies, as for the dealer, warranty items only.

Yes, its to satisfy your emissions warrenty, I.e. your catalytic converters. And, not to be an a** but you should be running 75w-85 gear oil for the front and rear differentials, everything else looks good, nice write up

 

Ok, it's not a formal "write up" but you "wrote up" everything I needed to shop for so thanks for the "shopping list"!

Full flush of what? I'm not going to full flush the brakes- had extended lines put on today and asked the guys, they said usually around 4 years to full flush the brake fluid because the newer trucks have a good closed system. I'm going to drain and fill front and rear diffs, probably do my synthetic oil change early ( since even going 5K miles makes the oil almost black), spark plugs, rotate tires and grease the zerks on the drive shaft.
As for transmission- gonna have to read more about when to do that. My plates pretty full as it is.

 

I changed to platinum plugs in my 2010... Should last way longer.. Cant understand why Toyota doesn't use then in the v-6..

 

Hey I got a quick question. I truly don't know and I'm sure it's an easy question.

I've been thinking of changing my trans fluid to redline because I've heard and read nothing but good things.

The 75w90 you have listed for the trans.....it is also the same fluid used for the front and rear diffs???

Check in your owners manual, but I know for 2012 and up you need 75w-85 for the front and rear diffs

IIRC, the cabin and oil filters cost include shipping, I forgot to include the airfilter cost, but I think it was $8 from Rock Auto. The Rock Auto stuff was combined with a bigger order so shipping was cheap, and for the last taco air filter, the order was combined with a WRX air filter and cabin filter for $20 for all three with shipping. The bucket of gear lube was Amazon prime, I can get Castrol GL-5 from Amazon for less than the price of the house brand at Auto Zone and such. I tend to place a Rock Auto order once a month or so, the last order was for some fancy ANCO wiper blades, with a excellent rebate. I use the Wix filters for the TACO on the jeep and a SIL 4Runner, the gear lube goes in almost every vehicle, a full change in the M37 is most of a bucket.

Also, I am maintaining three pickup trucks, one Jeep Sahara, one
dodge Town Wagon, a WRX, a Honda Accord, and eight motorcycles, so I have to shop around. Typically, when I do go to a Walmart, I will get every bucket of Mobil 1 5W-30 they have since it get used in the jeep, wrx and taco, the old dodge trucks get 15W-40 from the farm store in the five gallon bucket. I buy virtually all my filters by the case, and use a specialty supply company for the motorcycle maintenance parts and filters. Cycle Gear seems to have the best prices on motorcycle oil these days.

You do not have to spend serious money on fancy motor oil or gear lube unless you have very special needs, and a taco is a pickup, not a sports car. On the other hand, it seems that the vast majority of my maintenance expense last few years is TIRES...We have bought 12 tires since November, two sets of four snow tires for the jeep and taco, and summer performance tires for the WRX when the snows came off.

And internet ordering is good for up here since a round trip to the NEAREST autoparts store is 45 minutes, and their stock is terrible.

It also seems that maintaining vehicles is kind of a hobby of mine...I used to run a bus garage, 35 years ago.

FWIW you should read up on the red line, not worth it in your diffs IMO. Save yourself some money and get Mobil 1 synthetic unless you are one of those die hard redline guys.

Your AT fluid. I doubt 30k is the interval it's required at though.

I believe in 2009 Toyota made the change from 75W-90 to 75W-85 for the Diff's for fuel economy. I don't see there being a terrible difference between the two. Anyone care to pipe in here?

I'm in no way a die hard fan of redline. In terms of the GL-5 in the diff's they're currently running Mobil-1 but it'll be redline for this round. I'm going to send out a sample for analysis and compare it to the sample from the redline after another 30K.

Actually, I use my local Firestone dealer, he matches TireRack prices, and he also maintains my company car also...I would rather give him the entire job and not split with TireRack.
