The noise I hear is the usual valve clatter that 1GR-FE VVT-i engines are famous for; I believe noise interpretation is subjective.

Well, while it's good to see, I'm really salivating over bigcrab's since he has 20k miles and shouldn't be seeing any break in metal numbers. Will be interesting.

    epa4wd,

Blackstone is right - high levels of certain metals and contaminents are normal on a new engine, ESPECIALLY in the fill of oil installed at the factory. I also have a 2015 Tacoma that I bought in March. I've been changing the oil very frequently, and having the results analyzed each time - pretty crazy, but I like doing this for fun. As you can see, my early fills have high levels too, and my Tacoma does NOT have this noise.

@Lucario Runner , I wonder how this compares to the Redline data you have?

I am curious how many people have pulled the valve covers and checked the valve lash? Since it is incredibly easy to check on these engines. At least to be able to share their findings and rule out that as a potential issue or not.

Anyone think mine sounds abnormal? You can hear actual knocking at the beginning and right at the end of the video the best, in person its more noticable then in the video. Hate to start another thread about this so hopefully someone here can help.

I've had two 2nd gen Tacomas with the 1gr and didn't notice this knocking on my old one.

I think yours sounds like a version of the pulsing whine. There are a lot out there. We're just trying to determine if it's a problem or if it just sounds like hell.

I took a video of mine, but couldn't replicate the sound. It's been alot warmer here though, and i do have a fresh oil change.

Hmmm.. I'll listen closely again when I crank her up. I can't hear a whine. All I can hear is a hollow knock towards the front and underneath.

I think we're talking about the same thing; we just have different interpretations of the sound. Maybe. Who the hell knows anymore.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting anything wrong or usable from the test since the truck had only 1600 miles and it was the factory oil, I just wanted to mess a little with the dealership, since they were going to change the oil, so when I told them, put a little sample of the used oil here because I'm going to send it to a lab, they freaked out a bit and at first refused to do it. I just basically wanted them to know that I was collecting informaton, at the end everything worked out for the best.

In post 121 I posted a before and after oil pump replacement video, it can be heard that the noise went away with the oil pump replacement, so I'm confident that was the issue.

This issue is puzzling to me... I've searched the web and came up with numerous videos on youtube with Tacoma's exhibiting this cold start whining / pulsating / knocking sound. This thread has ultimately determined that the oil pump is causing the problem. It's so widespread that it can't be a bad batch of oil pumps, it that were the case it would only be an isolated group of trucks affected. If it were a faulty design then everyone would have this issue, seems like it's a hit or miss some experience it whereas others don't. I checked out my build date 05/15 and another truck on the dealer lot with the same build date and it has this exact same noise. The youtube videos I've seen range from 2012-2015 Tacomas and even 4Runners. Makes sense as various versions of this engine were used across several platforms. So what gives? Are there possibly different vendors for this oil pump or just a lot of bad ones floating around out there even though they're brand spankin' new? I would presume it's a Denso part? Hopefully Toyota will have to issue a recall at some point if enough owners complain.

Yes - the copper is most likely from the oil cooler - you have the towing option - right? If so, it's from the engine oil cooler. The levels will go down by the time you hit 30K miles or so.
