    Hi Folks,

New to the forum. I am playing the waiting game. I have a silver trd-or double cab 6mt with premium/tech, tow, and black tube steps, and black interior on order in the Philly suburbs. 3 weeks and no communication from the dealer. I put down a $500 deposit and received $1400 off msrp and Kelly blue book "excellent" condition trade in value for my trade which is a 2015 Accord sport 6 MT.

I am a long time manual driver having owned from recent to older 15 accord 6mt, 2011 Frontier automatic, 09 370z 6mt, 06 mazdaspeed6 6mt, 2004 acura rsx 5MT, 1991 Nissan stanza 5mt. I have never owned a Toyota vehicle before. I miss my frontier but it was an auto and I missed the stick during the time I had it. The frontier was a pretty good truck and never gave me probs in 4 years but I'm sure/hope the 16 Tacoma will be much better. I have only test driven a 2016 4-cyl auto Tacoma which was nice but slow and a 15 TRD-OR auto Tacoma which I wasn't too impressed with.

My question is has anybody measured the actual throw distance for the 6MT on the new Tacoma?

I have been reading here that throws are long and annoying and also that they are not bad, both very subjective measurements. My stock 15 Accord sport has a 2.25" throw distance from neutral to 3rd and the same distance from neutral to 4th. For a total of 4.5" going from one gear to another. This is definitely slightly longer throws than my 370z had but the Honda is way smoother and less effort requiring of both the throw and clutch than the accord. The accord doesn't seem excessively long and is a very enjoyable and easy car to drive. Thank you.

Just went out and measured for you, the throw from neutral to 3rd is 2.25" and width from 3rd to 5th is 1"

:) Awesome thanks. So the throw is identical to the 2015 accord sedan! It's accurate to call the throws "carlike"

Just measured the width from 3rd-5th is 1.25" in the accord, wider than the Tacoma.

There is so much more to driveability than just the throw.

That said this trans shifts like butter. It falls into gear.

First gear is short, but it's a trade off. You want that low first for off road.

This engine lacks torque off the bottom, but flies when you rev it.

Overall 6MT is the right trans for me. I love it

How much do you rev it before shifting typically? I'm liking the manual trans, but I find that the 1st gear is pretty low...

I drove a friend of a friend's 2d gen Tacoma from San Francisco to Chicago about 5 years ago, not only never having driven a Tacoma but never having driven a truck EVER, and had no issues whatsoever with the manual transmission. Between San Francisco and Illinois is, oh, about a dozen mountain passes, all kinds of grades, freeways, Interstate, city, and it was no big deal. So when I hear people complain about a balky manual transmission or long throws, I wonder what context these people are coming from, and can't really imagine.

That said, FUCK YOU TOYOTA CORP FOR NOT PUTTING A MANUAL IN A MODEL I WOULD ACTUALLY BUY

Just picked my my manual transmission TRD OR today. Switched from a manual Honda Element, and have never driven a MT truck before. The transmission is definitely different and has longer throws, but is incredibly easy and smooth and with 50 miles on it I am not even aware of it anymore.

Will say that coming out of 1st is sometimes not very smooth unless I've revved up to around 3k.

We have a MT Honda CR-V same as the Element - the Hondas definitely have short shifters from the factory. So you get a good comparo.

That said even with a slightly longer throw in the Taco I'm EXTREMELY happy. It's a truck and it feels like driving a truck and is A LOT OF FUN to drive. Short shift kits for the 2016 will be out soon, not sure I need one TBH and I've had short shifters on a few cars of the years.

Agreed Bob. I was planning to get the short shifter when it comes out but it feels so good to me right now that I'm worried that the short shifter might change things when put on!
