    Hey guys,

I've gotten most of my oil changes on time or near it, I'm at 37,000 miles and looking to do the 30,000 mile major maintenance. From what I understand, it's basically changing out cabin filter, oil change, and other miscellaneous stuff. Is the only major thing changing out spark plugs? I'd like to save a few bucks and do it on my own if that is the only thing. I believe it costs ~$250 at the dealership?

    I have a Toyota Tacoma 2012 TRD 17" rims Access Cab 4WD.

Dang. Its been 5 years since ive touched the undercarriage of my car. Replacing fluids should be easy as replacing fluids if I recall from my jeep.

Yup spark plugs are easy enough as long as you have thr spark plug pullet

Yup... Sparkplugs should be on your list. They are due every 30,000 miles since they are copper plugs. Someone already linked the "how to" earlier and that's what I used. Takes all of an hour to do. I change the rear diff fluid every other oil change (probably overkill) but it's not going to hurt anything. I also grease both drive shafts (assuming you have a 4x4) each time I change the oil. I change the oil and rotate the tires every 5,000 miles.

Then I spend the rest of the day cleaning from front to back. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to maintenance on my truck.

OCD is a sickness lol... In reality it allows me to get under the truck and see if there is anything that need attention. And yes before you ask. I take it off road often.

Why does the Tacoma use 30k plugs? Aren't there better plugs?

    That is amazing.

Only slightly off topic for this thread.... But, I built a TPMS "bomb" when I got new wheels. Put normal valve stems in and have had no issues. It's been about a year.

The 4.0 uses Copper plugs. Copper is a great conductor of electricity so I suppose that's why they do it. The engine is designed for those plugs. Some people put iridium plugs in but I just use what it calls for. I know the 4cyl uses iridium plugs and I think the change interval is around 100K if I'm not mistaken.

Copper plugs which Toyota supplies with the Tacomas are only scheduled to last 30k. Copper plugs in general tend to not last as long as others out there on the market. I believe @chris4x4 did a write up on the truth behind spark plugs. It's a very interesting article that explains how OEM manufactured (NGK/Denso) plugs perform "better" than some of the higher "quality" plugs.

What's really strange is when you change your plugs the first time one side will be NGK and the other will be Denso? Don't know why. When you go to the dealership they will give you Denso's when you replace them.

Oh I know. What's even scarier is when you change the spark plugs on your truck to find that the originals are still in there... with 100k on the odo. I noticed that the NGK plugs appeared to have more wear than the Denso's did. I've heard Toyota has used the two different brands for eons, but it's definitely strange.
