How Good are TRD Tires for Offroad Trips

I am planning to go long trip with alot of road driving nothing past level 3 or no rock crawling stuff, how good default tires that came with my trd will be P265/70R16 Goodyear All-Terrain Adventure tires with Kevlar-reinforced sidewalls or should i replacement with BFG KO2?

just curious how many kept them or used them.

 

They've worked fine for me for a few hundred miles of mild to moderate off-road. However, they are not generally regarded as robust tires, and several people have sliced them up off-road. I'm going to run my down to the wear bars and then probably replace them with something more rugged.

The KO2's are well regarded but plan on loosing at least 1 mpg depending on the size and load rating you buy. Also, the stock Goodyear AT's are great on-road, so plan on trading down in that regard if you "upgrade" to a better off-road tire.

There's a thread somewhere extoling the virtues of the stock tires. You might want to check that out for more opinions.

 

thats what i am afraid of is to slice a tire in middle of nowhere on some simple rock, i dont know how kevlar protection is setup in these tires have a feeling its just stamp and useless tire.

in regards of size i was thinking getting same size no larger or smaller 265/70/16

 

I think TRD stock tires are Wranglers. Not bad, IMO. They'll do what you're describing. I like BFG's...but Half is right, they kill your mileage if you're a "hyper-miler." Stock tires were horrible a few years ago. My 2014 TRD Sport came with bicycle tires.

 

I would say it depends. I was pretty impressed with the stock tires in terms of grip and capability. They handled everything I did no problem. However what pushed me to KO2s was the rocky nature of the Colorado trails where I'm at. The Kevlars started showing signs of some tearing on the tread. So I pulled the trigger on the BFGs. I didn't want to get stranded in the wilderness.

However, I went to 17s so I could get C rated K02s (E rated seemed overkill). MPG's changed 1 mpg or less (I have a M/T, get about 18-20 city, 22-24 Hwy). I did 6 4 Wheeling trails a couple weekends ago and am doing several more in August. I felt completely at ease with these KO2s. Fully confident of their durability.

But really, the trails you're going to do are only ~3 level (Trail damage rating?), your Kevlar A/T will do great.

 

C rated seem hard to come across.
Where did you find yours at?

 

The C rated KO2s don't come in 16s so I bumped up to the 17s (Got the TRD Wheels). All the Discount Tires in Colorado Springs had multiple sets of C Rated BFGs. As far as I can tell, the only C rated A/T tire in 16s were the Wranglers.

 

how much do trd wheels run? 17? and do u have to do a lift to get them or no, sorry for noob question, but i am thinking that i want 17 could of swore i seen tacoma limited with 17 so think i might do similar thing trd tires and all

 

Ain't no thing, I was in your position not too long ago. No lift required as long as you stay within stock tire size. Stock suspension-wise, I think 265/70-17 is the absolute largest you can go. I had to take off the OEM front mudguards for 4 wheeling. The tires would minorly rub them going over major bumps and when turning at the right angle. It only happened a couple times, but some of the trails I was doing was tearing up the mudguards anyways.

Pick up some 4runner take off's from CL. They are great looking wheels and you can get them cheap. Then you can run 265-70-17 load range C KO2's.

I would never ever run load range E on a Tacoma.

 

I do a fair amount of fast gravel just in my day to day and racked up nearly 400 miles off pavement across Death Valley and Mojave this spring. I'd estimate a little over 1000 miles of the 20,000 I've put on the truck so far have been off pavement. The stock tires are still holding up just fine. I run between 17 and 20 psi if I know I'm going to be off road for a while, that alone makes a huge difference in both comfort and puncture resistance.

 

I bought a set of STMaxx 265/70/17's and mounted them on 17" TRD wheels. They are 'E' rated and are my dedicated hunting season/offroad/winter crap tires. I've run Coopers in my past truck (E rated) and they are tough tires off road and take a lot of abuse. I had M/S Coopers and where my friends needed chains to get up a snow/mud trail those Coopers just chewed it up. I don't care that E range tires run rough. I'm used to a truck handling like a truck, so a cushy ride (like with the stock tires) is not as important.

I've only owned one set of BFG's and suffice to say for what I do and where I go they were not the right tire/tread design. Might be fine for dry trail stuff, and I think you can get them in a load range 'C' if you are concerned about ride quality.

I'll keep the stock wheels for dry summer trail rides and long road trips, and simply swap them out when I need a tougher tire.
