I ordered a URD shifter last week. Should have it tomorrow or Tuesday. Let us know what you had to do to get it installed.

Oh I didn't get it installed and am likely scrapping the whole idea. I'm not sure it can be installed without cutting the trucks metal. I've also read many reviews where people have had the ball break off while driving.

major bummer. Any contact with URD on this? Cutting metal should not be necessary.

Is this is only short shifter on the market for 3rd gen?

I sent them an email Friday night and they got back with me today. They stated that they have 100 of them in the field and have not had any complaints besides mine so im not sure what I'm doing wrong. I do know the directions are different for our 3rd gen trucks.

Mine was delivered a few minutes ago. I have a couple hours before work, so I'm going to try to take a look at it now. Stupid question......shifter boot pulls straight up to detach from the main console right? Rather ask before breaking it. I've tried to pull up on it seems super tight.

This is the part of the console that pops up. Start at the front around the shifter where you have something to grab hold of. There are numerous clips all down the sides and back where it ends in the front of the console storage. No screws or bolts hold that in.

It takes some effect getting it off due to the emergency brake sleeve but it all pulls right off. Let me know what happens with the front bolts that hold the shifter assembly onto the transmission. Good luck!

I had to cut metal in my 2nd gen to reach the front bolts but I guess it can be done without cutting with a joint at the tip of the ratchet.

I spoke with gadget from urd today who was kind enough to call and talk with me. He stated that some special wrenches might be necessary for some trucks or maybe access those bolts from under the truck. He stated that cutting the metal should not be needed. Maybe some of these trucks have the transmission further forward than others. I'll re attempt my install this Sunday.

This will hopefully solve the bolt issue. I won't have time to mess with it until 10/30.

If you guys wouldn't mind measuring off the dash to the shifter in 1st and 2nd. Before and after to get a rough idea on how much it actually shortens the throws that would be awesome

This is the before. I started in first gear and shifted to second. It's about 5" with stock shifter. Will post follow up results of new shifter

I recall picking up a short shifter kit from URD for my 2006 Tacoma and it ended up placing too much stress on the shaft itself. The shaft was made of two pieces, with a dampener in the middle. One day it gave way and needed to get another shaft (long story short). I couldn't drive it without the replacement.

I did away with the URD kit and picked up a B&M short shifter. It came with a new solid shaft and I really liked that. There was more vibration, but nothing annoying. Unfortunately, I don't think B&M makes one for the 2016+.

I recall others had the same issue with the shaft breaking in two, although it wasn't really widespread. I don't know how the current stick shift is made, but I can't imagine it's much different.

    Anyways, thought I'd share.

So is there any news on the shifter? Do you like it dislike it? Any tips or comments?

I ordered a pivoting box wrench today for the front bolts but won't have time to mess with mine till Sunday. Vitalzone was going to take a look at his but I have not heard from him.

I didn't get the opportunity to mess with it yesterday before work like I had hoped. I ripped into it tonight after work. Top of the console was easy to detach. The e-brake boot was a pain in the ass to slip over the finger swell at the bottom of the handle. A little bit of 303 protectant dripped onto the boot lubed it up enough to get it over the handle, after trying it dry for 30 minutes. I used a 1/4" drive flex head ratchet with a shorty 12mm socket to loosen the front bolts, along with a box end wrench on the end of the handle for leverage. I can't possibly see how there is enough space to tighten the supplied cap screws once the spacer is installed. I may try using a ball drive, if that doesn't work I'm switching to a hex head fastener. The cap screws look a little long as well. I could be wrong about all this, just thinking out loud. I will try to get the shifter assembly removed tommorow, and do a dry run before a permanent install.

Cool! I was also wondering about clearance with the spacer and those long bolts. They suggested putting the assembly together and then slide it all forward and see if the bolts drop into the holes. No way you're dropping them in once it's in place.

Agreed that was my plan as well. I just went back out to the garage, and measured 2 1/4" from the top of the tranny to the tunnel. The bolts happen to be 2 1/4" oal. This might create a problem by scraping off rtv when sliding the assembly forward, although coming in at an angle might be the ticket as well.
