Transmission removal

I am pulling my 95 Tacoma 5sp tranny and can not figure out how to reach the top two bolts connecting it to the motor. Thanks

 

Take the crossmember out and the transmission will drop down enough to reach those top bolts with a long extension and a flex socket . It will also help if you put a jack under the transmission before you remove the crossmember

Is it necessary to disconnect or loosen the engine mounts for this? Probably a dumb question. I didn't do this when I lowered it to replace my ADD actuator and I am worried I overstressed my engine mount rubbers. I have had a very slight vibration since that I can't pinpoint, but it may be something else.

Edit: I misspoke, I lifted the transmission/xfer case and tilted the engine forward.

 

If you place a jack under the transmission when removing the crossmember , it will give you the ability to reach the top bolts of the transmission . Once the crossmember has been removed , put some wooden blocks under the engine oil pan to prevent the engine mounts from becoming stressed . There is no need to remove the engine mounts

I've had luck using a socket on an extension through the shifter hole on the floor board. Using multiple extensions gives it the flexibility to bend around the housing.

 

Just got the bolts out. I am trying to pull the tranny now but it won't come. The tranny is separated about an inch from the motor but won't dome completely off. Thanks

 

Spray the dowel pins with wd-40

 

I beleive they are already free. I can spin the tranny and move it back and forth

 

Yah I was thinking about this after I posted that . On some trucks , those dowel pins are over an inch long .
If you can spin the trans . the input shaft is stuck on the splines of the clutch disc . Give it some lube. You may have to get forceful but it will come out

 

Check the lower trans cover, its between rhe bottom of the trans and the oil pan. I had this same problem and realized i didnt take that off and it was htting the flywheel and i could not get the trans out.

I've done that exact same thing before. Normally once you move it initially away from the block it will come off pretty easy if there are no blockages.

 

Got it pulled and now taking it apart. I was driving and it got stuck in fifth gear and would not come out no matter how hard I pulled. Any thoughts??

 

I was thinking a rebuild may be needed

Once you have the aluminum case removed and separated , mount the gear assembly in a vice . You dont have to mess with the detents or interlocks
